This weekend is going to be a lively one at Canalside. The 4th Annual Buffalo Maritime Festival kicks off on Friday, featuring a ton of activities, events, productions… from acroyoga to live music to a magic show, there will be something for everyone at this three-day festival. The festivities also include a chance to see Old Boats Buffalo and the World’s Largest Rubber Duck!
Once your done frolicking from event to event, relax at the beer garden or enjoy some grub from any one of the food trucks.
The 4th Annual Buffalo Maritime Festival presented by Catholic Health is Friday, August 26 – Sunday, August 28, 2016.

- 10 – 10:45: Pat Mahoney (Architect from Lauer-Manguso & Associates) – “Pierce Arrow Museum – Frank Lloyd Wright Filling Station”
- The filling-station exhibit in the Buffalo Transportation Museum was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Elmer Harris Oil Company in Buffalo in 1927. Company treasurer, William R. Heath, had commissioned a local architect to design a Dutch-colonial cottage, but when Wright was given the chance, he produced the design for a modern masterpiece without historical influences. The presentation will examine the reasons the station was not executed in 1927, how Wright tried to use the design for other clients and why it is in today’s Buffalo Transportation/Pierce Arrow Museum.

- Paul will be talking about the Canal Street area, also known as the “infected district.” This area previously had 125 bars that were actually brothels that serviced boatmen and lake sailors.

- This Buffalo Maritime Center program targets kids at risk of dropping out of school, in hopes of directing them into technical or trade-oriented educational programs. The Hand to Hand program consists of two-hour sessions for two or three days/week, for a regular 20-hour-semester, credit-bearing course. The curriculum includes concentrations of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) materials presented by a certified teacher in a nontraditional ‘hands on’ format, where the kids build a boat with a Buffalo Maritime Center mentor.

- 1 – 1:45: Steve Rubach (of Old Boats Buffalo) – “Antique Outboard Motor Basics”
- Now that you’ve picked up an old outboard motor at a garage sale, estate sale, etc., what’s next? Steve Rubach will illustrate basic steps on how to bring the old motor back to life. He’ll also discuss different manufacturers, years and types or motors and answer all your boat-related questions.

- Transform a block of styroforam into a well-crafted paddle board!

- John will present a PowerPoint on the array of extravagant private yachts built for Buffalo’s wealthy industrialists in the halcyon days before WWI. He will share the fruits of his research on the design of these boats and the fascinating stories of families who owned them in the days when Buffalo had more millionaires per capita than any other American city.
