Phase IV of restorations at the main auditorium of Shea’s began recently. The work is expected to bring an end to 18 years and $20 million dollars of restoration.
This final phase will restore 80% of the ceiling, which includes the dome and high walls. The other 20% was restored last summer along with the proscenium. This is the first time that extensive cleaning of the ceiling will have been done since Shea’s first opened in 1926. The plaster has suffered water damage and the electrical wiring and lights will be replaced (with LED).
The companies hired to help with restoration are SafeSpan from Tonawanda and Evergreen Studios from New York City. They will see to the restoration of the original artwork on the ceiling that also dates back to 1926. Work is expected to be finished by August 29th. The summer season is a slow one for Shea’s, as most Broadway companies don’t launch their touring season until fall, leaving only a few wedding receptions on the calendar.
Funding for these restorations comes from the NYS Environmental Protection Fund, a grant from the State Historic Parks office, a grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, and public and private donations.
