The Scoop Shop clothing consignment store recently changed hands, with new owner Wendie Reed taking over the reigns of a business that has been operating in Buffalo since 1945. The Scoop Shop first got its start in the house of its founder, “Flossie” who wanted to give women in the city a place to consign and shop for gently used name brand clothing at reasonable prices. That concept still rings true today, as Wendie continues to sell “current” clothing sourced from women who are apt to change their wardrobes from season to season. There are also some great retro and vintage finds at The Scoop Shop, along with a new men’s rack of clothing.
The Scoop Shop is found in the Elmwood Village, but it is slightly tucked away on Auburn, and may be easy to miss if you’re not familiar with the neighborhood. Since taking over the business, Wendie has reorganized much of the merchandise, making it easier for shoppers to find what they’re looking for – jewelry, hats, gloves, handbags (Coach and Gucci for example), shoes/boots, luggage, scarves and a wide variety of wearables. The “high quality pre-loved clothing” sets the shop apart from many of the “Salvation Armani-style” outfitters in the area.
Thankfully, The Scoop Shop has a new owner such as Wendie who prides herself on continuing on with the traditions established almost 70 years ago. It’s these types of businesses, with incredible longevity, that stand the test of time for a reason – they are good at what they do, and when a formula works they stick with it. The Scoop Shop has a solid customer base that depends on Wendie to take a hands-on approach to merchandising and service, and that she does with reverence.
Here’s to seeing The Scoop Shop around for another 70 years, providing Buffalo with stylish finds priced in an affordable manner… and a place where a little gossip is as natural as it was back in the day when Flossie would invite women into her house for a cup of tea and a browsing experience that couldn’t be beat. If you want to get the “scoop” on the neighborhood, be sure to stop by for Happy Hour the first and second Fridays of the month. After playing dress-up for a spell, The Scoop Shop ladies head out to attend an art or social event in the city where they can sip a cocktail and socialize – hopefully sporting vintage gloves and sunglasses purchased at the shop’s Happy Hour.
Look for The Scoop Shop to set up shop at four Larkinville events this summer.
