Internationally bestselling author of “The Cider House Rules,” “A Prayer for Owen Meany,” and “The World According to Garp” on stage at Kleinhans
American-Canadian novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter John Irving will be making an appearance in Buffalo at Kleinhans Music Hall for Just Buffalo Literary Center’s BABEL author series. Irving, who garnered international acclaim with the release of his fourth book in 1978 – a novel titled The World According to Garp – went on to write numerous other successful works, including The Cider House Rules.
Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1942, his books explore themes of sexual difference and sexual intolerance, inequalities, and discrimination.
The appearance of Irving, as part of the BABEL author series, is a fantastic opportunity to hear firsthand from one of the most prolific and admired writers of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, whose best sellers often went on to become acclaimed films.
“It has been extraordinary to see the community’s response to John Irving’s upcoming appearance. So many people have told us that he’s one of their all-time favorite writers. Their eyes fill up talking about how much his books mean to them,” said Barbara Cole, Executive & Artistic Director. “But, even if someone’s never read a John Irving book, this is an event they won’t want to miss. Everyone can come feel inspired by this living legend who has touched so many hearts and minds.”
Irving has been nominated for a National Book Award three times, winning in 1980 for The World According to Garp.
Tickets, which also include a virtual link for the option to watch from home, are available to the general public for $40; $35 with library card; $10 with student ID. Patron VIP tickets, which include an author reception before the event, are $100.
