Each day, we wake up praying and hoping that the war in Ukraine will come to an end. Until that happens, communities around the world are rallying together, united towards a common cause – to help those who are being brutally subjected to the wrath of Putin.
As a way to persevere, and to stay strong, there have been mounting efforts (both big, and big at heart) to raise funds for the struggling Ukrainian people, including efforts such as bake sales and concerts. Now, Olenka Bodnarskyj and her committee are organizing an auction that will rally together some of this region’s best artistic talents, along with a group of up-and-comers that will one day be trailblazers in the local art scene.
The Sunflowers for Solidarity Benefit Art Auction will feature upwards of 60 artists, showcasing (and selling) their sunflower-inspired works, with proceeds to benefit Ukrainian American Freedom Fund’s (UAAFF) Humanitarian Aid for Ukraine*. The event will be held virtually, as well as in person at the Dnipro Ukrainian Cultural Center on Friday, April 29, from 6-9pm.
“While the sunflower has long been Ukraine’s national flower, since the beginning of the war, it has become a symbol of the resilience, resistance and solidarity of Ukrainian people,” said Olenka. “It is with this spirit that the arts community has overwhelmingly come together in solidarity to create and donate their own art in support of Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian American community of Western New York, working through the UAFF in Buffalo has been supporting Ukraine with medical supplies since 2014, and has already sent 30 tons of supplies to Ukraine since Putin first invaded Crimea.
At the esteemed auction, some of Buffalo’s youngest artists will be exhibiting their works. These original works from the up-and-comers will also be reproduced and printed in the form of greeting cards, which will be sold at the fundraiser.

Guests attending the event will enjoy live music, a cash bar, small bites, and a raffle. For additional food and drink options, Dnipro’s downstairs bar and kitchen will be open, serving traditional Ukrainian fare.
Art has always played a crucial role in uniting people across the globe. Now, with the addition of a thematic sunflower, we are going to see the power of art take hold, yet again.
