There are dog friendly events, and then there are dog friendly events.
Over the course of the last three years, the Shakir Family Foundation – a non-profit organization created by Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir and his wife, Sailor Shakir – has been dedicated to spotlighting adoptable dogs from local shelters. This is mainly done through the annual Shakir Family Pet Adoption Event, which teams up local animal shelters and rescue organizations with community members who may be considering adopting a new four legged friend.
This year, the Shakir Family Pet Adoption Event will be held at The Stables at Knox Farm State Park. This new venue will allow rescue groups to spread their wings even further. The rescues that will be in attendance at the event include Allie & Pals, Awesome Paws, Buddy’s Second Chance Rescue, Buffalo Underdogs, Daisy’s Promise Dog Rescue, Heart Animal Rescue, Nickel City Canine Rescue, Puppy Mill Rescue Team, Sadie’s Safe Harbor Canine Rescue, Ten Lives Club, and 7 Hearts.
It was through Nickel City Canine Rescue that Khalil and Sailor Shakir rescued their own dog named Missy. The rescue process was what ultimately led the couple to coming up with the idea for the event. They figured that the best way to get more shelter dogs into loving homes would be to organize an event that would be dedicated to the mission of the rescue groups. Along with the rescue organizations, the event will feature vendors, entertainment, activities, and opportunities for the community to support local rescue animals.
Attendees can look forward to: adoptable pets, vendor shopping, food trucks (Fat Bobs and Buffalo Bros Burgers), family-friendly activities including a bounce house and games from Buffalo Freddy Kids Zone, photo opportunities, special guest player appearances, and a silent auction including signed memorabilia.
Participating vendors include Alford’s Angels, Bestfriends Barkuterie, Buffalo Dapper Paws, Buffawix Candle, Charmed at the Bar, CHQ Beverage Co, Comfy Bandits, Compassionate Canine, Creations by Ark, Creative Butterflies, Doggie Stylez, DogHawz Treats, FYB Pet Apparel, Good Neighbor Supply Co, Hounds & Hops, Meliora Forever, Memories on the Move Mobile Bar, Mom’s Halo, Paws N Praise, Olive & Grove, Sweet Buffalo, Threaded & Lace, Two Little Acorn Designs, Que 42, and Zoom Paws.
Proceeds from the event will support both the Shakir Family Foundation and participating rescue organizations.
The Third Annual Shakir Family Pet Adoption Event will take place on Saturday, August 29, 2026 (2-6pm), at The Stables at Knox Farm State Park.
Parking: Space is limited at Knox Farm for parking. Use the overflow lot at Parkdale Elementary, where there will be two shuttles transporting people all day.
