After a long hiatus from music gatherings, the Gypsy Parlor Jazz Jam returns to Buffalo. The Jazz Jam takes place the first Monday of each month (8-11 pm) at the Gypsy Parlor. Owner Gabrielle Mattina, supporter of all things Buffalo, and Becky Davis, vocalist- Northwest Lewiston Jazz Festival alumna, agreed, “Let’s do this!” And it’s been going strong since it started last June.
It all began in 2014 by vocalist Einat Agmon who sadly passed away 4 years ago. And then there was the pandemic. But now the jam has returned to Buffalo. Accompaniment is provided by Bob White (keys), Abdul Rachman (drums), and Marvin Jolly (percussionist). After 45 minutes of the core band playing, the stage opens up to players and vocalists. All skill levels are welcome.
With the historic Colored Musicians Club closed for renovations, then the pandemic, social and cultural needs were not being met. There was this void. The remedy? Gypsy Parlor Jazz Jam.
Jazz impresario, Andy Vitello, who owned the Blue Note club on Main Street along with the High Note on High Street, has been in full support of the Jazz Jam. Andy said, “Great music, get your ax over to the Gypsy Parlor tonight, two hours of woodshedding and great food. Lots of fun.”
Another jazz impresario, Peter Tasca, owner of Milestones on Main and Fillmore, along with legendary jazz DJ Joe Ricco, said, “Great time, great music, thanks!” Music maven Gary Marino agreed by saying, “Best hang in the 716, Gypsy Parlor.” Kevin Doyle, popular musician in town, added, “Gypsy Parlor Jam rocks!” And Gabrielle Mattina imparted to me, “You have the most amazing voice,” which was very kind of her to say.
After 10pm the young lions come in to blow, including Jared Tinkham (guitar), John Troy (sax), Griff Kazmierczak (trumpet), Brendan Lanighan (trombone), Dalton Sharp (sax), and vocalist Alex McArthur.
Gypsy Parlor – a venue that is committed to hosting a wide range of community entertainment – has added this spectacular jazz night to their calendar. It’s free, with a great menu, including vegan dishes and a full bar. And if you’re feeling lucky, Gabrielle will be giving away two dinner gift certificates at the December jam. It’s time to get bejazzled!
