American Repertory Theater of WNY Presents HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL

Scheduled to get the 2018-19 season off to explosive start is the local premier of the musical based on the 1988 cult-classic film, HEATHERS. In her Artistic Director inaugural season and making her debut as a director for ART/WNY, Candice Kogut will oversee this compelling and timely piece of American musical theater.

With music, lyrics, and a book by Laurence O’Keefe ( of BATBOY and LEGALLY BLONDE score fame) and Kevin Murphy (lyrics and co-wrote the book for REEFER MADNESS), the story of HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL tells the story of Westerberg High School being terrorized by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather (the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio). But when rebel with a clue Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a dark sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their rightful six-feet-under place, Westerberg High will see a new sheriff in town -once the smoke clears.

Director Candice Kogut has assembled an outstanding leading cast featuring, alumni Madalyn Teal (JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR) as ‘Veronica’, company newcomer Joe Russi as ‘JD’, ART/WNY choreographer-in-residence Carly Luksch as ‘Chandler’, alumni Kelly O’Hara (JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR) as ‘McNamara’, with ART/WNY debutantes Talia Mobley as ‘Duke’, Parker Welling as ‘Kurt’, Jake Grear as ‘Ram’ and Kaeli McGinnis as ‘Martha’, ART/WNY alumnis Katy Miner (HELLO AGAIN, FIRST LADY SUITE) as ‘Mrs Flemming’, Nick Lama (A BEHANDING IN SPOKANE, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR) as ‘Ram’s Dad’, and Rich Kraemer (THE UNDERPANTS, FLOYD COLLINS) as ‘Kurt’s Dad’ will round off the leads. Ensemble includes ART/WNY first-timers Noah Allen, Robert Barksdale, Allison Barsi, Amanda Barsi, Claudia Calieri, Joseph Lotocki, Michael McCormick, Quinn McGillion , Jenna Pilecki, Lucy SanGeorge and Elizabeth Teal.

HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL opens on September 6th and runs until September 22nd. All showtimes are 8 pm. Tickets are $25/$15 Student, Military and Industry. Grateful Shred:
Wait.
I know what you’re thinking.
Another fucking Grateful Dead cover band? Really?

The thing is, Los Angeles-based Grateful Shred manage to channel that elusive Dead vibe: wide-open guitar tones, effortless three-part vocal harmonies, choogling beats, and yes, plenty of tripped out, Shredded solos. The look, the sound, the atmosphere. It’s uncanny.

“It’s more of a ‘take’ on the Dead than a tribute band,” says bassist Dan Horne. “We end up sounding almost more like the Dead because we approach it in this free-spirited way; in other bands, they’ve got the perfect tones dialed in, they practice the drum parts, they’ve got their ‘Jerry.’ We just play.”

Founded one night in 2016, the band came about almost by accident. Singer/guitarist Austin McCutchen had a residency at The Griffin in Atwater Village; his band was out of town, so he drafted some friends to play a set of Dead covers, and the four founding members (Austin, Sam, Clay, and Dan) have been together ever since. Sam Blasucci and Clay Finch (of country-folk revivalists Mapache) handle vocal and guitar duties, rounded out by bassist Dan Horne (of Cass McCombs, Jonathan Wilson, and the estimable Circles Around The Sun, who provided the incidental music for 2015’s “Fare Thee Well” concerts, the last shows played by the living members of the Dead). Add a rotating cast of drummers (like Richard Gowen of The Growlers) and keyboardists (like Lee Pardini of Dawes and Jerry Borgé of Ziggy Marley), and you’ve got the essential formula.

Jams convene at Liberty Hair Farm in Echo Park, the Shred’s HQ/commune/studio. It’s at the Farm where they live, breathe, and record. Just watch the hallucinatory footage of the band tearing through “St. Stephen” (filmed live in their backyard) or “Shakedown Street” (those harmonies!). Grateful Shred is the sound of 5 guys who aren’t afraid to learn from the masters, but who know to explore beyond the pale, searching for the sound. “Never the play the same thing once,” as Phil Lesh says.

Far from being a historical re-enactment, Grateful Shred’s laissez faire vibe infuses the band with a gentle spirit, warmth, and (dare we say it) authenticity. From their killer merch game (look for a new line with Dead revisionists Online Ceramics) to their eminently watchable YouTube channel, they’re clearly having a rad time and spreading the love. Strangely enough, in a world overflowing with wax museum nostalgia and Deadly sentimentalism, we need the Shred, now more than ever.

Event Details

Buffalo Arts Studio is pleased to announce a new Community Space Exhibition, Dream Land. Featuring the artwork of Amy Greenan, Melanie Fisher, and Travis Keller, this exhibition will explore identity, collective memory, and the speculative-surreal tied to each of the artists’ engagements to the landscape genre. Dream Land will be on view from February 22 – March 16, 2019, with an opening reception as part of M&T Fourth Friday, February 22, 2019, from 5-8pm.

Dream Land is one in a series of nomadic exhibitions curated by Dreamland Arts, Inc. in an effort to reconstitute the organization’s visual arts branch. This comes in the wake of Dreamland being forced to leave its first home at 387 Franklin Street in the heart of Buffalo. Dreamland’s long-term goal is to raise enough money to purchase a property within the city of Buffalo and renew their commitment to Buffalo as a coalition of artists, activists, curators, and volunteers dedicated to Dreamland’s mission of providing a cultural alternative for artists and patrons of the Arts in the Greater Buffalo area.

Amy Greenan lives and works in Niagara Falls, NY, but one day expects to permanently land in the California desert or northern Arizona, where she has seen some of the most amazing landscapes ever. Inspired by a cross-country road trip last year and a new job at an environmental services company, she’s going back to school for environmental studies with the hopes of being an activist scientist of some kind.

Melanie Fisher’s sculptures are organic and otherworldly. With influences from nature and sci-fi, she builds large forms that are new hybrids of species, with mixed characteristics from the plant and animal kingdom. By working in a range of scales and mediums, Melanie explores the connections between our micro and macro worlds, imagining the opportunity to discover something previously unknown.

Travis Keller’s paintings are tied to the memory of his home city of Las Vegas, and those memories of living in a city led to an interest in Dystopian literature and cinema. His works often stir memories while depicting scenes that do not exist. Excessively stacked living environments visualize the fragility of social and class structures. While the presence of light is the only indication of the landscape’s vast population, the unseen residents only clear path out of their situation is through a seemingly impossible climb.

Saturday, February 23rd – Consider The Source w/ Witty Tarbox

-Doors: 8:00pm, show: 9:00pm
-Tickets: $12 ADV/$15 DOS
-Ages: 18

About Consider the Source:
NYC trio Consider the Source defy easy description. If intergalactic beings of pure energy, after initiation into an order of whirling dervishes, built some kind of pan-dimensional booty-shaking engine, powered by psychedelics and abstract math, it’d probably just sound like a CTS tribute band. Drawing from progressive rock, fusion and jazz, with alien sounds soaked in Indian and Middle Eastern styles, CTS blends disparate parts into a striking, utterly original whole. Dubbed “Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Fusion”, the band’s music strikes a rare balance between cerebral and emotional, intellectual and primal. A relentless touring schedule has won the band a fervent following from California to Israel, with fans ranging from jam-band hippies and jazz cats to corpse-painted headbangers and prog geeks.

Formed in 2004, Consider the Source features Gabriel Marin on fretless double-neck guitar, bassist John Ferrara, and drummer/percussionist Jeff Mann. Called “the guiding light for his generation of six-stringers”, Marin channels the mystical fury of McLaughlin and Coltrane into wailing melodies, kaleidoscopic soundscapes and boneshaking riffs. With a background in classical musics both Eurpoean and Indian, and an instinct for avant-jazz and destructive metal, Marin’s hypnotic fusion of styles is ever unpredictable. Ferrara’s propulsive, percussive attack, equally suited to simple grooves and impossible chords, can ground the music or launch it into space. His madcap gumbo of slap bass, Indian rhythms, earthy minimalism and complex tapping constantly pushes into strange new worlds, whilst still dropping thick booty-clap beats. Underneath them lies Mann’s rolling thunder; dense rhythmic architecture built from pure swagger and bounce. Half double-bass prog-metal, half crackle-pop Buddy Rich swing, with African and Balkan swirls, Mann’s muscular, freewheeling polyrhythms are the engine fuel for Consider’s multiversal mischief. Even when not improvising, Consider’s music is always a conversation, a roiling stew of dynamic interplay. Each member of Consider the Source alternately leads and follows, spars and assists; in any single song, alliances are made and broken, bargains struck and divorces finalized.

Touring from coast to coast, as well as Europe and the Middle East, has not only earned the band thousands of fans, but has allowed them to perform with a wide variety of well-known artists, including Victor Wooten, Wayne Krantz, King Crimson Projekt, Kris Myers (Umphrey’s McGee), Wyclef Jean, Andy Statman, Matt Darriau (Paradox Trio), Oteil Burbridge, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Dumpstaphunk, Keller Williams, George Porter, Jr., Jeff Sipe, Panzerballet (Germany), Eatliz (Israel), Freak Kitchen (Sweden), Morglbl (France), and many others. They have performed at numerous festivals and events, including Burning Man, Gathering of the Vibes, the NYC Fretless Guitar Festival, Catskill Chill, Sun Seekers Ball (Canada), Aura Music & Arts Festival (Florida), Jazz Fest (New Orleans), Head For The Hills Festival & SXSW (Texas), Rootwire (Ohio), and the NYC Gypsy Festival. The band’s latest release, “World War Trio (Parts 2 & 3)” (2016) is available at considerthesourcemusic.bandcamp.com.

Event Details

Did you know Vivaldi composed the majority of his choral music for an all-female ensemble in Venice? With actual Female Tenors and Female Basses?!? Based on the work of the world-famous Vivaldi’s Women ensemble (Oxford UK), this performance aims to re-create the sound world of Vivaldi’s Venice, featuring an all female ensemble, with some of Buffalo’s finest singers on the “Gloria”… Including Tenors and Basses! Come hear this special, unique, authentic performance of one of the greatest choral masterworks of all time! We are also presenting a haunting aria from one of Vivaldi’s recently rediscovered opera, premiered by a Female Baritone.

In the second half, the orchestra will present Pedrollo’s Concertino for Oboe, and violin soloists of the Camerata in a round-robin performance of Paganini’s “Il Carnevale a Venezia.” Afterward, enjoy Bellinis and Venetian hors d’oeurvres & sweets!

Free Venetian reception to follow! – MASKS encouraged. Co-sponsored by The Italian Vice Consulate of Buffalo.
Off-street parking, tickets $20 at the door or by subscription
Free admission for ages 17 and under (accompanied by an adult)

Be sure to get there early, especially ticket holders – the word is this performance is going to sell out, and sell out quickly. Arrive early! Tickets are available at the door, to those who already are season subscription holders, and through select members of the choral ensemble.
Doors open at 5.45… show is at 7!

Please note that non-flash photography and video is welcomed from your seat, but we need the audience to stay in their seats throughout the duration of the performance. Please do not get up in the aisles or around the altar, this is very disruptive to the performance. Thank you!

Event Details

Great Decisions is a nine-week community discussion series held in collaboration with the Foreign Policy Association (FPA). The International Institute hosts this event and recruits local experts from universities and organizations to speak about critical topics.

This week’s topic: “Cyber Conflict and Geopolitics”
Facilitated by Dr. Arun Vishwanath, Communications, University at Buffalo

Cyber conflict is a new and continually developing threat, which can include foreign interference in elections, industrial sabotage and attacks on infrastructure. Russia has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States and China is highly committed to using cyberspace as a tool of national policy. Dealing with cyber conflict will require new ways of looking at 21st century warfare. Is the United States prepared to respond to such threats?

All participants have the opportunity to complete national opinion ballots for each session, which the FPA puts in a report to the White House, the Departments of State and Defense, members of Congress, the media and concerned citizens. We encourage participants to discuss how national policies are impacting the local Buffalo community.

Tickets will be available at the door: $7 // $5 (students & educators)

Are you frustrated by behavior challenges that put your child in control of your home? Have your discipline methods stopped working? Do you want your children to have good morals, be compassionate, and be self-confident?
The Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) is a language-based approach that can help you regain focus and power and re-build the love you want in your home. NHA teaches us why our typical parenting methods don’t always work and can even make things worse. The magic rests in its ability to use language to build “inner wealth” and to make positive connections to those around us by focusing on what IS working, at all times.
You will learn how to hold clear limits and consequences while you build positive connections. You will immediately FEEL the difference in your home, and in time, you, your children and your family learn to flourish.
