Carolina Story, the married duo comprised of Ben and Emily Roberts, released their debut album Lay Your Head Down on Black River Americana which quickly became a Top 15 album. They are currently out on the road as direct support to Bob Schneider with stops in LA, Chicago and more. In 2017, the duo signed with Black River Americana as the flagship artist on Black River Entertainment’s newly formed Americana label and made their Grand Ole Opry debut. The couple met in Memphis in 2007 where music and fate ultimately drew them together. Amy McCarley is set to celebrate the recent release of her album, MECO, at the Sportsmen’s Tavern on September 22nd. Tickets are $5 at the door. Doors are at 1 p.m. and the show is from 2-4 p.m.

McCarley’s album MECO traces her experience of what it’s been like leaving life as a NASA contractor to pursue a career in music. On the road, she has shared stages with Ronnie Milsap, John Hiatt, Doyle Bramhall II, Marty Stuart, Lilly Hiatt, Delta Rae, and many others, and has graced festival stages such as Kerrville Folk Festival, 30A Songwriters Festival, EarleFest, and more.

Uniquely relatable, McCarley’s music is embraced by Americana fans across the country and abroad. Each medium and psychic has a different method by which they open themselves up to receive messages. This party will give you the chance to ask those questions you may have always wanted to ask but were not sure if you should.

The party will be in two parts. First, a question and answer session. Any audience member can ask a question to any medium. Kelly Wahl, Kathleen Bouthillier, Suzanne Suchan, and Reverend Ellen Bourn will discuss how their gifts work. After the question and answer session, there will be a quick break. The party will then resume with gallery readings for the attendees by all four mediums.

There will be an hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour where you can mingle with friends and the mediums before the party begins. Southern Culture On The Skids has been spreading the rock and roll gospel since they formed in Chapel Hill, NC in1983. MAN MAN is a highly revered, avant-garde rock band born out of the weird streets of Philadelphia and now brewing in the even weirder sunshine of Los Angeles. The band sounds nothing like but is frequently compared to some of the more well-known godfathers of the genre, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Can, and The Residents. The ever-evolving ensemble mixes and mashes a variety of genres from ragtime to rock, electronic to acoustic, doo-wop to exorcism and it revels in defying classifications, expectations, and anything remotely cliché. Still, what emerges from that mixture are beautifully crafted little pop earworms that can’t easily be dislodged from your brain. Man Man is known for its multi-instrumental style that centers around the piano abusing lead singer, songwriter, and creative force Honus Honus. The other members play a number of important roles, from wielding clavinets and marimbas to a variety of wind instruments, random toys, and noisemakers. The band famously engaging live shows often feel fee and formless, as each musical number morphs into the next without a break, while its musicians quickly change instruments – and often costumes – as the mood and music dictates.

Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter, road-dog, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on the Northwest side of Milwaukee, he took a semester in Ireland, and immediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hitchhike through the country, finding whatever gigs he could. Back stateside, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for Boston, where he returned to busking (this time in the subway) and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows, which eventually led to regional and then national and international touring. The wheels have not stopped since.

Eighteen records, one illustrated book, thousands of live performances, a TEDx talk, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp, opening for luminaries such as Ani DiFranco, Emmylou Harris, and Chuck Prophet, appearances on NPR, an annual autumn tour by bicycle, emceeing festivals, hosting his own boutique festival (the Lamplighter Sessions, in Boston and Wisconsin)… Mulvey never stops. He has built his life’s work on collaboration and on an instinct for the eclectic and the vital. He folds everything he encounters into his work: poetry, social justice, scientific literacy, and a deeply abiding humanism are all on plain display in his art.

Early in 2017, a series of upheavals found Mulvey living through a winter in a friend’s empty house in the small Midwestern town of Fort Atkinson. Unmoored and lost in the middle of his life, walking hours each day, sometimes with friends but most often alone, along the frozen marsh of the Bark river and through the wintry oak savannah nearby. The songs came in fast and strange and vivid. At night he wrote them down at a table in the spare house, just a mile from the Cafe Carpe (which Mulvey describes as his spiritual home). These songs became his new record, “There Is Another World,” a vivid dreamscape of imagistic, haiku-like auditory sketches, within which are plenty of wrenching, haunting, and even sweet songs.

Diana Chittester stands on stage with an arsenal of acoustic guitars. Whether she’s solo or with her 4-piece band, the show is always brought to life with signature percussive multi-part playing, mimicking a full band on a solo acoustic guitar without the use of gadgets or a looper. She blends her intricate finger-picking guitar style with intelligent and articulate lyrics. The personal stories and vulnerability she shares on stage resonate with audiences as she invites them along on her journey.

Music Connection Magazine noted her “intelligent and articulate lyrics” on the review of her first full-length album, In This Skin (2012). Dubbed a “Guitar God” by Skinny Devil Magazine and “a complex guitar acrobat” by ArtVoice Magazine, in 2017 she was invited to perform on the “Cellar Sessions” series recorded live at City Winery in NYC. Diana tours regularly in the US and Canada including folk-rock venues such as The Ark, Music Box Supper Club, Rockwood Music Hall and Performing Arts Centers across the Midwest. Her latest album is Paradox, which is available now.

Emotional Baggage/Mind Your Baggage

Paige Allison Healing Arts and the Compass Performing Arts Center are proud to be presenting “Emotional Baggage” by Lindsay Price. Recently seen at the Buffalo Infringement Festival, “Emotional Baggage” is a 30 minute one-act play without words. Each character has their own baggage to deal with. We see how this baggage impacts their movements and lives.

This piece is presented with a 30-minute guided meditation to help each audience member explore the baggage they might be carrying and give them a method for releasing it. This presentation invites you to “Mind Your Baggage”, allowing you to see and shed your emotional baggage with our performance and guided meditation.

About the Show:

We live in a world where it is normalized to carry the pain and burdens of our past with us in each moment. When we live with the weight of the world on our shoulders, life becomes a monotonous exercise in futility. However, when we are able to immerse ourselves in the present moment through music, art and self-expression, we can release ourselves from the weight we carry and life becomes a joyous journey. It is the hope of those involved with this production that one day all of humanity will live with the effervescence that comes from healing the wounds of the past and existing fully present in each moment. With luck, this project will encourage us all to remember that each person has their own baggage and to honestly evaluate our own. Ultimately, each person is responsible for their own baggage and their choice to hold on to it or release it. What do you choose?

Mind Your Baggage:

The decision to produce this show with a Guided Meditation experience to take the audience further into the topic was an easy one after the talk backs following the presentation of this piece at the Buffalo Infringement Festival. This meditation provides a platform for the audience to explore the topic within themselves, while allowing the experience to be personal and private. Beyond self exploration, the meditation includes a process for releasing the baggage within. Those who attend the production will be provided a copy of the meditation, so that they can utilize this tool whenever it is supportive to do so.

Phyllis Thompson’s solo exhibition, “Making Memories,” uses monotype printmaking to construct images rooted in childhood memories that focus on experiences both real and imagined with family and friends. She uses a monotype process akin to the direct process of collaging, because, like memory, it is an imperfect system that often brings forth surprising results. Her process includes visual elements such as patterned fabric, textured papers, and faded photographs to construct portraits of ancestors she has never met. These ancestors, whose solemn, reserved eyes stare forward into time, envision a moment where they may be both physically and systematically unshackled.

Thompson achieves this unshackling through the physical manipulation of the figures, removing them from the picture. This bodily removal leaves an echo of whiteness in the composition, and fading more still, until their silhouettes are akin to wallpaper. In this space, in the removal of physical form, Thompson’s spiritually present predecessors are abstracted; falling back and melding into wallpaper that is replete with vines, curlicue and blocks of color, all of which recall the artist’s earliest explorations in monotypes. The work presented therein becomes meditations on individuals, feelings, memories, and experiences, which are replayed through visual representation and allusion.

Paloma Barhaugh-Bordas’s solo exhibition, “Understory,” is comprised of multimedia monotype and collage to construct historical narratives. Her work adapts and appropriates the vernacular of the many regions she’s called home and traces the self-conscious search for cultural roots as a first-generation American. Her work is at once both familiar and unsettling.

Barhaugh-Bordas’s work, spanning print media, begins with photographs and drawings, often of plants, which have grown twisted and gnarled, recording in their own way the geographies they have occupied. Houseplants provide a link to nature in one’s intimate space, but are at the same time a sort of ecological colonialism.

Barhaugh-Bordas hold a deep belief in process, and uses print media to investigate and inform the meaning and purpose of serial works, which are full of repeated symbols, definitively graphic marks, and a flip-flop of translations from paper to press and back. Rather than creating multiples from a single image, Barhaugh-Bordas works in series and reproduce imagery and symbols across multiple prints.

About Magic Beans:
The Magic Beans are a band sprouted from the cultural island of Colorado that are set out to bring their unique, genre-blending music to the masses and inspire good times. In the modern age, where things are no longer quite as black and white; the Beans strive to be as inclusive as possible by skirting the lines between many genres within their unique sound. The recent addition of drummer, Collin O’Brien has brought new fire and life into band. The current incarnation of the ever-developing sound of Cycles reveals itself today as a speeding freight train of sound and rhythm. Screaming peaks and balanced grooves find their way out of the chaos of a jam while samples ripped from the likes of Madonna, Lil Nas X and many more ring out and grab the unsuspecting audience by surprise, adding to the multicolored blend of sound filling a room and often standing out as comedic elements of the show. Drawing influence from artists such as Rage Against the Machine, J. Dilla, Primus, Weather Report, and many more, Cycles fuse an eclectic blend of genres to produce an original sound that has become harder and harder to find. Aaron Copland was a fine pianist: he premiered his own “Jazz” Piano Concerto in 1926. As he continued to write for the instrument throughout his illustrious career, he increasingly turned to other pianists for the interpretation of his music. On October 25th of 1957, pianist William Masselos gave Copland’s Piano Fantasy its first performance in New York City. Dear to the composer’s heart, he originally subtitled it ‘The Music Within.’ In commemoration of the 62nd anniversary of the work’s premiere, pianist/composer Adam Sherkin presents the Piano Fantasy alongside his own music written especially for the occasion: Prelude: “The Music Within,” and Postlude: “The Music Beyond,” both world premieres.

It’s difficult to impart the roots-steeped, road-trippin’ essence of the Adam Ezra Group into a single word, but frontman Adam Ezra nonetheless keeps one in mind as something of a mantra: community.

To the musicians at the heart of AEG, community is epitomized by a belief they all share, one that has long doubled as a mission statement for the group: namely, that making music together is itself a form of grassroots organizing, capable of nothing less than changing the world.

That Ezra and his bandmates hold sacred such an inclusive approach to their craft helps explain the gathering storm of an album that is “Hurricane Wind,” one of AEG’s most ambitious undertakings to date. Not only fan-funded, but also fan-produced, the project found the broader AEG fan community playing a role in every step of the process from inception to its release on May 21st 2017.

Such a groundbreaking form of collaboration makes all the sense in the world for a musical collective like AEG. After all, as Ezra sees it, the fans are really part of the band, active members of their movement who’ve always exercised a critical role in AEG’s ability to carry out its mission. This inclusive approach to musicianship, centered about respecting and celebrating their listeners above all else, Ezra insists, is what has allowed the group to explode out of their Boston-area origins to emerge as one of the most uniquely powerful, relentlessly entertaining live-music experiences in the country.

AEG’s grassroots efforts recently caught the eye of John Oates, of Hall & Oates fame. For the past year and a half, Ezra and Oates have been regular writing partners, meeting up in Nashville between tours. Three of their co-writes are featured on the upcoming Adam Ezra Group album, and Oates himself joined Ezra in the studio to sing and play on the album. They performed their first co-written song, “All I Am”, live in-studio as an acoustic duet, a process also shared with fans, who were invited along for a virtual tour of the studio as well as granted access to unreleased studio performances.

Last December, AEG galvanized their community partnership by releasing 23 studio demos to fans, including multiple collaborations with Oates. Ezra established an innovative framework through which fans could follow the process of song arrangement and studio tracking, help whittle the album down to just 11 polished final cuts, steer artwork creation, and assist in naming the project itself.

The now-released album, “Hurricane Wind,” speaks to an elemental, overpowering force of nature, a quality AEG believes exists in every human being and can be magnified through the unifying power of music.

When the record arrived on May 21, the AEG fanbase turned the full power of its collective hurricane wind outward, and shared the music for free with over 5000 people over the course of two weeks. Such a groundswell of activity wouldn’t have been possible even a few years ago; “Hurricane Wind,” to AEG, represents both a celebration and reaffirmation of how remarkably that community has grown.

Even amid ballooning success, Ezra says it’s been not just easy, but natural for AEG to stay dedicated to its mission and true to its humble roots. Perhaps no song sums this up more than a fan favorite, selected to anchor the new album. Called “I Believe,” it’s a gorgeously layered, nakedly emotional ode to the long path they’ve already traveled as a community – and to the wide-open road ahead.

You’ve got a style, that comes on like a hurricane wind,” sings Ezra on the track, backed by a group of musicians all equally engrossed in the material and attuned to its significance.

“You’ve got a spark, that lights the fire that never ends.” With his next lines, Ezra speaks not only to the internal maxim that keeps him moving, but also to the enduring force for hope and change that his band has come to symbolize to its ever-swelling fanbase: “And in the times when hope is gone, you give me the strength to carry on – I know the path is long, but I believe.”

Come learn about alpacas and the alpaca lifestyle. Experience alpacas up-close. Feel the alpaca fleece and see how we wash and process the fiber to make it into yarn and clothing.
See artisan’s working with alpaca fiber. There will be spinning wheel and drop spindle demonstrations, carding of alpaca fiber, wet felting and needle felting of alpaca fiber into art and clothing. Shop in our “garage sale to feed the alpacas” or visit our alpaca products farm store. Remember how cold you were last winter??? Get your warm socks, gloves and more before the cold weather sets in. There will be children’s activities and story time with an alpaca. Food will be available for purchase. For those interested in starting their own alpaca farm, ask about our mentorship program and view the alpacas for sale.

About LIVE AT THE FILLMORE, a tribute to the Allman Brothers:
“LIVE AT THE FILLMORE is the continuation of my devotion to performing the music of the original Allman Brothers Band as it was performed in those early years before the untimely deaths of Duane and Berry Oakley and the departure of Dickey Betts. For me, those years were the ‘glory days’ of the Allman Brothers Band. Unlike others who believe the band was a jam band, I share the view of Gregg Allman, who has been quoted as recently as 2003 by fellow band member Butch Trucks in stating that rather than being a jam band The Allman Brothers are “a band that jams”.

My perspective on the music is that rather than completely free-form in its structure, form and content it is a body of work largely composed after much trial and error and ‘jamming’ in order to extract those elements which ultimately became part of the finished songs. Anyone like myself who had the good fortune to hear the Allman Brothers shows ‘back in the day’ on the same or successive nights will corroborate that though they did leave room for improvisation and personal expression, for the most part the songs remained the same. This has continued to be my approach to performing their music.

Along with the other highly talented and committed musicians in LIVE AT THE FILLMORE, this is my attempt to bring back authentically the performances of the original Allman Brothers Band for those who were there to hear and still remember them along with those who have a similar love of this music and wish they had been there with us. We hope you enjoy listening to LIVE AT THE FILLMORE!”
