This Saturday, the 23rd, the Main Place Mall will play host to a Youth Chess Tournament sponsored by Councilmember Antoine Thompson. WNY children enrolled in 4th through 8th grade classes will be playing.
Michael McDuffie, a federal chess champion, has donated his own time to teach and train local students the art of chess. Coordinated through the efforts of the Citizen Action of NY group, the Alliance for Quality Education program, and the Coalition for After School Funding, the tournament is designed to promote education awareness.
Fabiola Friot of Citizen Action explained the importance of teaching chess to today’s youth. IIt promotes patience and collaboration. Awareness and cognitive thinking are also key skills.”
The tournament takes place in 2 rounds, each consisting of 32 children. It will begin at 9:30 a.m. and wind up around 4. Add the chess tournament to your long list of great things to do downtown this weekend. While youire out and about, you can stop by and show support for some of our local students.
