A group of West Side organizations have teamed up to create a launchpad for aspiring entrepreneurs. Called the West Side Bazaar, the vending project hopes to open in June and upon opening will feature offerings as eclectic as the cultural diversity of the area.
Vendors are to be provided store booths, utilities, workshops and business mentoring in hopes of continuing to revitalize the Grant Street commercial district for local shoppers and tourists. The bazaar will contribute to vendors’ rent for the first two-plus years.
The effort is also intended to provide opportunities to the growing refugee population on the West Side.
Currently, the bazaar is having difficulty securing a location and has just $30,000 of the $60,000 it desires for startup costs. It is seeking funds from the government, individuals and foundations, with the goal of becoming self-sustaining after the first three years.
Among the products to be sold are jewelry, clothing, oils, spices, carvings, computers, groceries and diverse cuisine. The bazaar will be permanent, have as many as 30 booths and be open at least 30 hours a week. Thus far, 19 vendors have indicated their intent to participate.
Working in conjunction with legislators and concerned citizens, the organizations behind the bazaar include Westminster Economic Development Initiative, West Side Business and Taxpayers Association, Journey’s End, Jericho Road Ministries, People United for Sustainable Housing, MicroBiz Buffalo and West Side Ministries.
