Buffalo’s renaissance is happening, and its old buildings are playing a critical role. The Chippewa crowd on weekend nights is drawn by bars and restaurants located in – oil buildings. Former department stores, a warehouse, a school building are converted into loft apartments, and fully leased before the project is completed. A warehouse of the Larkin Soap Company is renovated into class A office space, and enjoys near 100% occupancy. Restoration and reuse are now part of the development mantra.
But how do they do it? This Saturday, Rocco Termini will talk about the ins and outs of converting an old building into housing, a grocery story, or a daycare center, from financing to construction to marketing. Mr. Termini has successfully developed a number of projects downtown, and is now taking on the Webb Building on lower Pearl Street.
This talk will be followed by a tour of Erie Community College City Campus. Find out how a former Federal post office and office building was converted into a college campus, and thus saved from the wrecking ball. The atrium is truly one of downtown’s grand interiors. Denise Prince will lead the tour.
The entire program begins at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 24 at the Market Arcade Film and Arts Center (639 Main Street). There is a $10 donation.
This lecture and tour are part of the Downtown Revealed lecture series. The series is sponsored by Buffalo Tours, a joint production of Landmark Society and Preservation Coalition.
