Last year, we saw a number of local churches get into the spirit of community events. Many of the events were a bit out of the ordinary – gatherings that were not typically related to what we might think of when going to church. That’s why I was struck when I saw this cool-looking function to be held at the Unitarian Church on Elmwood. I mean, how many times do you see a church booking where a band named Bloodthirsty Vegans is playing?
The monthly gathering turns out to be a potluck dinner and micro music festival. I asked singer/songwriter Kilissa Cissoko what the scoop was and she told me, “Dance Alive! is an all ages party on First Fridays each month in the Elmwood Village area. The first party on February 6th will feature live music by Ibis–with Steve Rao, Michael Sulzbach, Jonathan Attea, Jon Kidder, and Jonathan LoRusso. Their music is a very danceable blend of funk, soul, hip-hop and rock.”
Kilissa will also be performing, as will the house band Bloodthirsty Vegans (of course). The almighty house will be open for guest performers and drum circle (6pm – BYOD). Those wishing to participate (songs, poetry, jokes, readings, skits) must get there early and sign up for a time slot. $5 (kids and teens free). 6-10 pm. Besides the music, there is going to be a potluck dinner where guests are encouraged to bring some food to eat (and share if you like). Don’t forget to pack some dishes and utensils – eat until the food is gone and then settle into the music. This is what community is all about. Cool music to sooth the soul and some hot food to warm the heart – see you at the church!
