As the world’s craving for sushi grows, “Poke’” is a buzz word that has been turning heads. Hawaiian in root, it means “to slice or cut” and refers to chunks of raw, marinated fish. Poke has been part of the Polynesian culture since its inception. One wouldn’t imagine Buffalo, New York, would be a spot for fresh seafood, though that is exactly what you get at the new Fresh Catch Poke Company (FCPC). Owners Mike Tobin, Justin and Ashley Draper partnered on this concept to bring the west coast food trend to the Western New York food scene. They are…

Two short weeks ago the entire world was stunned when fashion mogul Kate Spade, along with Chef and long time TV personality Anthony Bourdain, both unexpectedly took their own lives, just three days apart. The culinary world has certainly been affected, as the veteran chef was an inspiration to so many. His trials and tribulations have been on display, for all to know and learn from, in many of his publications and TV shows. One person who was both inspired and impacted is Jill Gedra of Lait Cru Brasserie (346 Connecticut St, Buffalo, NY). “Anthony Bourdain was a huge inspiration…

Three years ago, Chef Mike Andrzejewski (Seabar, Cantina Loco)—considered by many in the industry ‘the godfather of food’ in Buffalo—told me, “Chef James Roberts is the best Chef in Buffalo but unfortunately no one can eat his food.” The reason? Roberts was the Executive Chef at Park Country Club in Williamsville for eight years, which meant that only a select few had access to his creations. So, when it was announced that James and Connie Roberts were going to open their first restaurant (Toutant), mouths everywhere rejoiced. Fast forward three years and likely ten thousand plus plates of fried chicken…

Maybe it’s the unpredictable weather, and maybe it’s due to bustling Buffalo… lately I’ve been having a hard time catching all of the events that continually pop up on my social calendar. But there is one event that I won’t be missing. The Buffalo Pierogi Fest! My Polish lineage wouldn’t allow me to. After all, I grew up with a Polish grandmother (we called her Bunia) who spoke the language fluently. She was always making various food delicacies from scratch, which were a staple in my diet. One of my favorites was the pierogi. I just couldn’t get enough of the pockets of…

Mainly known for its dive bars and late night hang outs, Allentown exudes a diverse eccentricity that is unlike any other area in the city. It was back in August of 2016 that I first learned that a new restaurant would be joining the wide array of establishments in the area. For me, the anticipation grew when I learned that Chef Chris Daigler, Joe Gugino and Chris Baker from Encore were behind the concept Falley Allen. Opening their doors on St Patrick’s day weekend, the crowds were booming to get in. It should be noted that patrons can choose between two…

A three pronged attack on Buffalo’s taste buds began close to three months ago. The first wave was Casa Azul. A partnership between Zina Lapi and Victor Parra Gonzalez (lead image) that puts out fresh handmade tacos, that lured people in. That opening was just a precursor to what was to come next, with Chef Parra Gonzalez opening Las Puertas (casual taqueria). After that will be the unveiling of the second floor of Casa Azul, with a full service restaurant and bar, opening (hopefully) in just a few weeks. Las Puertas, translated it means the “The Doors.” The name was spawned from…

If you’ve ever met me and the topic of food is brought up, you will quickly know that my goal is to eat at every restaurant in Buffalo NY. A pretty lofty goal I know, but I’m doing well on my quest with only about 200 or so left. Over the last two years I have been attempting to make it to the Black Iron Bystro, a culinary destination located on the border of Lackawanna, For whatever reason or another, it just hasn’t happened until now. It was while at the BRO holiday party, that Queenseyes and I hatched a plan to visit…
