We know that there are a lot of you out there who enjoy the city’s architecture. Of course there are many buildings that we drive by on the way to work… but what do these buildings look like when the sun sets. Many of the buildings, like the Richardson Towers, look totally different as the sky begins to darken. This is the fourth year that a group of bike riders will get together in the evening to see the changing appearance of a few of our best-known landmarks. It’s an informative, and healthy, 90-minute ride that will take you past…

I’ve seen this old mansion a thousand times and always wondered what the future had in store for it. It’s situated directly next to the back entrance of what was Latina Market. One of the last visits I paid to Latina Market, I actually walked up to the vacant residence to take a photo and snoop around. Just the other day Peirre Wallinder (WNY Properties) informed me that the house was being sold, so I called on the soon-to-be new owner, Charlie Frederiksen of Frederiksen Development, to ask him what his plans were. “We’re converting the house into eight luxury…

What are HABI-TAtts? And why are they so cool? First off, they are designed right here in Buffalo by artists Molly Lambros and Erin Harris. Second, these are unique canvas stickers that people can use to decorate their walls… or fridges… or fish-tanks. You can stick them just about anywhere, and you don’t have to worry about un-sticking them because they just peal off when you want to remove them. Create your own habitat by decorating with these design tattoos. Hence the name, HABI-TAtts. The artists have just started to stock packs of HABI-TAtts at a local store on Elmwood…

When you arrived to BRO today you may have noticed a few changes to the site. One of those changes was the elimination of what we call ‘headers’ at the top of the channel. In the past, the header has changed at midnight, serving up a new image for a new day. The images have had no rhyme or reason, just photographic strips pulled from larger images, usually taken around the timeframe of the current news day. The decision to eliminate the header was two fold: Load time and content relevance. Of course it takes a second to load an…

Pierre Wallinder has got his hands on a second exciting property at the corner of Michigan and Genesee. Once again, this is an entire package of buildings that stretch an entire block. Situated near a number of medical companies, the Washington Market, Market Arcade Theater, Old Editions, and everything else that I mentioned in last week’s The Dellenbaugh Block post, it’s only a matter of time before more of these parcels find productive futures. If someone were to capitalize on the sale of these two blocks (located two blocks from one another) it would be an incredible joint purchase. As…

The 2nd Annual Summer Wellness Block Party is coming up August 8th. Last year the block party attracted 2000 people to participate in healthy living practices. If you’re in the health industry, or just want to be ‘in the know’ when it comes to how to live a healthier life, then this event is not to be missed. With all of the food festivals in town, it’s nice to know that Roswell has our back when it comes to our health. This year visitors can expect to see over forty vendors participate. Along with Walking on Wednesdays (WOW), the cancer…

Elmwood Avenue is about to embark on a new marketing plan that the organization feels will help shoppers become even more accustomed to the district. This has been achievable through a $10,000 grant secured from the Oishei Foundation. The addition of a second full time staff person, Dan Leonard, has also been a big step. Not only is Dan excited to be on board with the association, he has high hopes for the street’s future. “I received my Masters in Urban Planning from UB,” Dan told me. “And I’ve worked with Justin Azzarella (Director) on projects before. The new position…

If you happened to miss the first two, then be sure to make the next two. Friday night movie nights that is. Cinema Sotto le Stelle, the city’s favorite Italian outdoor movie series, has been postponed for one summer, and in its place a series of silents and oldies has filled in. Cinema rolls every Friday in July at the Unitarian-Universalist Church’s side lawn (next to M&T Bank-Elmwood and West Ferry). There, movie-goers can unroll a blanket and break out a picnic basket while enjoying the two remaining picks. The movie schedule can be found on BuffaloResearch.com, and the group’s…

With all of the exciting business openings taking place along Hertel over the last couple of years, the Hertel Avenue merchant poster is a testimony to the district’s perseverance and success. I love seeing this poster come out because it just goes to show how eclectic the avenue has become. Not only are there a wide range of shops and restaurants, there are some neat old buildings too. For many years Elmwood Avenue has been able to tout many of its businesses through this sort of promotional vehicle. As a matter of fact, the Elmwood posters have been around for…
