Hopefully Buffalo Rising readers are aware of the proposed rehabilitation for the current Ontario Street Boat Launch in the city of Buffalo; the project is known as Black Rock Canal Park (BRCP). The County-owned land, that is in desperate need of repair and enhancements, is getting planning assistance from the local community. The Black Rock-Riverside Good Neighbors Planning Alliance (BRRGNPA) Land Use, Zoning and Urban Design (LUZUD) committee, has spent thousands of community volunteer hours to develop a plan and present it to every level of government, various community groups, businesses and waterfront users. Their award winning plans have been…

As a self-proclaimed wine lover—yet by no means a connoisseur—I can unabashedly say that I was delighted to take my husband’s name… if for no other reason than because it includes “wine” in it. Suffice it to say, I thoroughly enjoy what the many varieties of grapes can do. If you’re even the slightest bit like me, you welcome the opportunity to sample our area’s food and wine, and do so with a healthy mix of hometown pride and an adventurous palette. This is what we felt on Thursday night at the “Whine in the City” event at Shea’s Performing…

One of Buffalo’s greatest gifts is certainly Shakespeare in Delaware Park. The plays are free and something that many of us look forward to not just for entertainment, but as a rite of Western New York’s brilliant summer. In order to keep these grand experiences alive, please consider joining the 14th Annual Fabulous Feast on March 29th. It will be held at the stunning Connecticut Street Armory from 6-10PM. It’s always a good time with auctions galore (live, fishbowl and silent), dancing, singing and sword fighting! The feast is a show in itself with a cornucopia of wine and beer,…

Living just a few minutes from Hertel Avenue, I spend a lot of time there. I find myself drawn to neighborhood classics like Wellington Pub. On a recent Friday I stopped at Wellington, a family friendly place that offers quality food and a casual atmosphere. I usually order a fish fry when I go, so I wanted to try something different this time. I ordered the Pittsburgh Salad, described on the menu as “our neighbor’s original salad.” The salad contains chicken or steak, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and French fries. I tried the chicken version. Outstanding! In order to “keep…

February may be one of the harder months in the Northeast, especially here in Buffalo. The groundhog lets us know that either way we look at it, there are six more weeks until spring. There are not many better ways to liven up the bleak mid-winter and chase away the seasonal blahs than Mardi Gras–or, as Shea’s Performing Arts would have you believe–Martini Gras! The eighth annual Martini Gras event will take place Saturday, February 23 at Shea’s from 8PM until Midnight. Festivities take the form of psychic readings, a basket raffle, and gambling tables with “Shea’s Bucks”, all of…
