It was last year at this time when Choco Logo, downtown’s original chocolatier, led a fun-filled factory tour and celebration as part of their ongoing partnership with Robby Takac’s Music is Art (MiA) initiative. Here’s an interesting piece just posted by USA Today. It’s a tale of Buffalo’s architecture in a concise package that we are familiar with, yet outsiders are not aware of. Most of the article reads as a tale of two cities – one with an architectural stock in the midst of a major restoration effort, and the other as a city with an architectural portfolio in desperate need of help. If it were not for the Richardson Center and the Central Terminal, I would have to say that the read would have been exceptionally glowing. Regardless, even the negative aspects…

Thanks to everyone who showed up for the Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s rally in Martin Luther King Park earlier today. The rally could have been a bust considering that it was competing with a Bills game day and an unpredictable Mother Nature. Despite the slow drizzle, supporters came out to show that the parks are worth fighting for. Assemblyman Sam Hoyt spoke, warning that as the parks go, so does the money from The State. Councilmen Rivera and Kearns proclaimed that they would do everything possible to fight for The Conservancy, adding to the sentiment, “If it aint broke, then don’t…

I first wrote about Five Points Bakery back in April (see post), just after they opened. Since that time I’ve found myself becoming a regular at the bakery for, if nothing more, peace of mind. It is so refreshing to so a business open for all of the right reasons, to stay true to its original mission even if that means more work, and grow in such a way that the positive effects ripple throughout the community. You might say that the bakery is in the ever-expanding business of researching and implementing best-practice methods in order to share healthy, affordable food…

It’s always nice to get some love (in the form of publicity) from our neighbors to the north. This time the publicity goes out as a culinary shout-out from one of the Canadian Food Network’s blogs. They recently spent some time sampling a few of Buffalo’s edible sweet spots and came away impressed, surprised and wanting more. Thanks for the coverage even though I’m not sure how to take the writer’s closing comment, “I’ve just chipped an ice cube off of the culinary iceberg that Buffalo’s quickly becoming and I can’t wait to take a bigger bite!”I’m not sure that…

Hopefully by now you’ve heard of Wednesday Soups at CEPA. Apparently the soup night has been successful and that means that CEPA has raised approximately $750 that will be offered in the form of grant money to someone who submits a creative individual artist or community-based projects. There are no gimmicks or loopholes either. Just submit a one-page description by Friday telling CEPA what you would like to create and then hope that it’s inspiring enough to claim the prize. You only have until Friday, but if you have an artistic idea floating around in your imaginative brain, just write…

Chinatown has come to Buffalo in the form of Hu’s Discount Store. When I first saw that the long-vacant Elmwood storefront had been filled with a discount shop I thought to myself, “Oh man, another dollar store?” Then yesterday my curiosity got the best of me and I walked inside to discover that this was the type of business that I’ve seen so many times in the past when visiting Chinatowns in Toronto and NYC – the gloves and hats, the cosmetics, the watches, the tools, the toys and games… it was all there.I’m not against dollar stores per se.…

Downtown, brace yourself. Pearl Street Grill and Brewery is in the planning and building stages of a 4500 square foot authentic NY style deli. I got a sneak peek last Friday and still can’t believe the positive impact that this is going to make on people living and working downtown. I spoke to Earl Ketry, Managing Partner of the establishment, who told me that Brawler’s Back Alley Deli will be housed in the basement of the Pearl Street building – the original part of the structure that dates back to 1841.It’s hard not to get caught up in Earl’s fervor…

Just when you thought that The Place Restaurant was done reinventing itself, they’ve gone ahead and added a weekend brunch menu. Not to say that The Place has forsaken all of its old world character – it’s still the same restaurant and bar that we’ve all come to love over the years… just better. Thanks to the current breakfast offerings, I’ve found myself waiting at the front door on Saturdays – peering in through the windows to see if there’s any activity inside. Of course the doors don’t open until 11:30am on Saturdays and noon on Sundays… I guess it’s…

As the Buffalo Powder Keg Festival picks up steam, organizers have decided to hold a competition for creating a logo. We’ve even got a $250 Pearl Street Grill and Brewery gift certificate to give away to the winner. Not to add undo pressure, but we need to get the ball rolling on this in order to move forward with promoting the event (scheduled to take place February 27th and 28th). If you’re looking for inspiration for the logo design, I would hope that the image of a powder keg would be included. For additional inspiration, here are some of the…
