The Broadway Market, long Buffalo’s “go-to” place for its distinctive selection of Eastern European foods, farm-fresh produce and mouth-watering baked-goods, is set to expand its international appeal with its 2nd annual Christmas Food Fair. The Christmas Food Fair will be held at the Broadway Market on Friday November 28 and Saturday November 29 – Thanksgiving Weekend. Although relatively unknown in the U.S., Christmas markets are wildly popular in cities across Europe. This centuries-old tradition creates a cheery antidote for the cold and snow of December, with an event that invites the community to gather and share in the joyful spirit…

Now that the Broadway Market has changed management, it was recently voted to proceed with plans to host the second annual Christmas Food Fair at the historic Broadway Market on Thanksgiving weekend, November 28 and 29. Fresh and Fabulous from the Farm – A Sunday Supper One of my favorite things to do while assisting at the Slow Food Buffalo, Chef Demo table at the Bidwell Market is to people-watch. I get a kick out of observing the customers. They scurry from table to table curiously checking out what each vendor has brought in that week to tantalize their taste buds. Little kids sneak a blueberry while some people secretly squeeze a tomato. Many smell the flowers, sample some sausage or engage in lively discussion with the vendors. Neighbors say “Hello” to each other and catch…

I formulate the following response (to a commentor) in regards to clarifying the demo process. This question/request was fielded in the recent Saint Mary’s post. Most people don’t understand the demo process – what role does the Inspections Dept., Housing Court, Owner, Buffalo ReUse, City Preservation Board play? What’s an emergency demo? What if it has a historic designation? Etc. Peripatetic, in response to your demo process question: This is a little long and somewhat confusing. I hope it’s clear. It’s not specific to this building (Saint Mary’s) which I can’t comment on because it’s an open Housing Court case,…

Sunday Suppers is a Buffalo Rising series that encourages readers to enjoy an evening with good friends and family, while preparing and eating a simple one-dish supper. Ingredients should include fresh produce and local food products. As my picky-eater daughter was preparing for her first year at college, I started thinking about her opportunity to start a Sunday Supper tradition in the dorm. A tasty, nutritious meal made together with roommates and friends could establish a routine that fosters camaraderie and culinary creativity. I was concerned about the food choices she would have at SUNY Brockport. At home, a microwave…

High school reunions have a way of bringing out a grand mal mid-life crisis that makes all of the other introspective bumps in the road seem laughable. Andy Wicks (the central character in Too Cool) finds himself trapped in his former 15-year-old body after a visit to a hypnotist for help in quitting smoking. Looking at his awkward sophomore year through the eyes of a teenager with the mind of a grown man proves…
