Mid-summer weather like we had a couple of weeks ago reminds me of parades I have seen out west and in New York City. No snow, no rain, it is more like a Memorial Day parade than a Thanksgiving Day parade. Of course the Rince Na Tiarna Irish dancers marched as well as danced. How do they get that amazing hair? I just love Irish parades … as I love to watch Irish dancing, hear Celtic Rock, reflect on Irish proverbs and enjoy the wonderful spirit of the Irish. To view BRO’s Queenseyes post of the parade please click on…

This is the second and last part of a two part series called “Networking and Business Tips from Buffalo’s CEOs” event that was presented by the Buffalo Niagara Partnership at the Pearl Street Grill in downtown Buffalo. To view part one that appeared previously in Buffalo Rising, please click on Networking and Business Tips from Buffalo’s CEOs: Part 1. On this beautiful sunny mid-summer like day I parked at Smith and Elk next to St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church church parking lot, just seconds before the high noon start of the Valley Community Association’s 15th Annual “Old Neighborhood ” St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The parade retraces the original 1913 parade route, winding through historic streets of South Park Avenue, Smith Street, Elk Street, Hamburg Street, and O’Connell Avenue, from the Valley and Old First Ward neighborhoods.Oh, the sights of a parade!: Over 60 floats in all, many with banners of family clans over numerous generations. I recognized Western New York representative Congressman Brian Higgins and Buffalo…

As the doors at Kleinhans Music Hall opened at 7:00PM this past Tuesday (St Patty’s Day), it was alternately 11:00PM in England. In the back offices a telephone rang. It was London calling. The BBC actually. Concert From The Heart had gone international and presenter Max Pearson of BBC World Service had joined us for the interview. This was the same man who had once come close to dying while cycling in the deserts of Rajisthan while on assignment, after running out of water. Incredibly, he still cycles 16 miles a day in order to get to work and back.  …

Last August Forbes magazine declared that Buffalo is one of America’s Top 10 “Fastest-Dying Cities.” And again, earlier this month, we made that Forbes top 10 list calling our city ‘miserable’. Dr. Andrew Rudnick, CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership , strongly disagreed with Forbes’ “thinking” – as did so many business people and residents in our region, and spoke about it recently at one of the weekly meetings at a Buffalo Rotary Club event hosted at the HSBC Arena’s Harbour Club. I have provided some of his comments in hope that you’ll see why the magazine was so…

Growing up in Buffalo, going to Public School #56, and then Lafayette High, I was never overtly made aware of skin color. From kindergarten in 1968 to my graduation in 1981, people of color were always in my class – African American, Hispanic, Asian and more. Sure, there were instances where a kid would use a word they shouldn’t use to describe another kid. And, yeah, those words hurt. And, yeah, there were fights. And, yeah, there were problems. But, as a child, I didn’t understand any of this. I had my friends that were black – Leonard and Rodney…

Buffalo’s audience went wild at the Sportsmen’s Tavern open mike night last Monday. The Silver Beats had a wonderful visit at Roxy’s Karaoke night on Wednesday. Tadaaki “Paul” Naganuma and Hajime “George” Kubo especially enjoyed a fried bologna sandwich and the famous steak sandwich during one of their visits to the Old Pink on Allen Street. A young hip crowd welcomed them this past Thursday to the Pearl St Grill as they played two incredible sets. Area musicians that witnessed the performance were astounded at how the Silver Beats seemed to play their instruments exactly as the Beatles originally played…
