A few years ago Elmwood went through an amazing growth spurt that I believe was partially due to the upgrades in the avenue’s infrastructure. That surge has continued in those various sections that saw the most improvements. Now it’s Hertels turn. While driving down the street today I could not get over all of the new businesses opening. Accentric Home Accents is coming to the avenue, an ice cream shop called Bertha’s on Ice is soon to open (see YUM Channel), Empire Grill is almost complete (below), another new restaurant will surely make some jaws drop (surprise for tomorrow), Oddballs…

Mark Corsi, owner of Poster Art on Elmwood Avenue, is always introducing new Buffalo-themed products to his customers. Mark is the guy who releases a poster every four years that captures the storefronts of Elmwood. He is constantly promoting local shops by printing small business logos on the backs of event t-shirts. The posters in his shop showcase Buffalo architecture, sporting events, neighborhoods… you name it and Mark is promoting it. I ran into Mark (aka Bro) yesterday and he showed me his latest and greatest t-shirt design. It’s a shirt that displays the 15-mile an hour speed limit at…

As early as 1992, Kenny Glasgow was pushing the boundaries of modern electronic music through active promotion and turntable manipulation. As one third of JMK (together with Jeremy and Mike), Glasgow promoted and hosted illegal warehouse shindigs under the banner Family Tree. For two years the trio threw their renegade raves, inviting esteemed DJs such as Roger Sanchez, Nick Holder, and DJ Disciple to join in the fun. Glasgow’s unique skills behind the 1200’s earned him a spot at Toronto’s Industry. There he would mix a finely tuned blend of future house and funky techno alongside the likes of Daft…

One of Buffalo’s most infamous restaurants will soon be home to Country Park Child Care and Pre School. There was a recent push to re-open the original Cloister Restaurant in that location, but due to lack of investors the project was called off. Not long after the plug was pulled, the childcare and preschool announced that they would indeed occupy the space and are planning on being operational by year’s end. Country Park’s original location at 8469 Sheridan Drive was established in 1990 by Linda Clark, whose hope it was to maintain a clean, safe atmosphere while promoting a creative…

A pool and a pond. A pond would be good for you. -Chevy Chase But for the rest of us an indoor pool in the city can’t be such a bad thing. Especially when that pool is clean and comes with a whole bunch of amenities. This post was spurred by the lack of downtown waterfront swimming options. Yes, a beach would be perfect for a day like today, and it’s too bad that one is not readily available… so looking into alternatives is the next best thing. I know that there are some people who have pools at their…

The above photo (hanging on the wall of Cafe Aroma) captures what it apparently looked like eight years ago during a World Cup soccer game outside the cafE. People clamored at the windows to get a peak at one of the World Cup soccer games on the cafEis TV. Then, last year I remember that Prespa was the pub to watch the action. I know that they are expecting crowds for tomorrow’s game. I also received an email from John at Le Metro that many fans will be playing hooky from work in order to catch the USA noon kick-off…

What is the perfect job? It’s a job that you enjoy working at while making some extra scratch at the same time, right? If that is true, then Timothy (right) and James (left) have got it made. They are the owners of Buffalo’s newest clothing and accessory shop. It’s called Lab Indigo and if my initial impressions are right, then these guys are going to have a long run in the Buffalo area. As you can see from the photo, the two are having quite a time getting things going in their new digs (previous Feel-Rite location – corner of…
