This was the scene on Lake Erie yesterday… You couldn’t have asked for a better day to have The Weather Channel in town. The CVB has been working with TWC for the last few years in order to allow the City of Buffalo to play host for a two minute broadcast. Each time the visit was planned some major weather catastrophe hit (another city!) and Buffalo (Nancy Vargo) would patiently wait for the phone call signaling that the gig was on. Yesterday turned out to be that day… and the stars were aligned because you couldn’t have picked a more…

Chef Deli, a business that has operated in Buffalo for the last 25 years, closed its doors yesterday. Word on the street is that the operation was sold to another small grocery store. No news yet on whether the deli will take on a new look of feel… or a new name for that matter. Tatonka was on the scene yesterday speaking with Sam (owner) who was sad to see the place go, but was happy with the family’s 25 year run. I stopped into Jimmy Mac’s to see what was up and the door was locked. It turns out…

When driving around Niagara Square, be sure to take a look at all of the new Sister City Banners that are now surrounding the perimeter of the square. Each one is affixed to a light standard and is meant to remind us that we are part of a larger international community. Mayor Brown recently hosted a celebration marking the 30th Anniversary of the Buffalo and RzeszUw (Poland) connection. The gathering also honored the return of international banners to downtown Buffalo.

There’s a new calendar coming out that’s images showcase Buffalo’s Richardson Asylum. The calendar, produced by Binghamton photographer Roger Luther, is the second in a series that Roger plans on releasing. Last year he published a calendar of Isaac Perry’s “Castle” in Binghamton and now he’s hot on Richardson. Hopefully the release will continue to shed light on the asylum, a National Historic Landmark that continues to deteriorate despite allocations of money that never seem to find their way to the iconic campus. More information is available at Luther’s website http://nysAsylum.com. Proceeds from the sale will help continue the effort…

A long time ago Figmo typed up a post dedicated to how great the Firefly phone was for kids. It was kind of an experimental post as we were trying to nail down what sort of topics we were going to cover in the Trend Channel. The post was actually geared towards parents – showing them how useful the phone could be for their kids. It turns out that over the last year there has been an ongoing thread on that post. Just like their adult role models who duke it out in the City Channel, kids have kept the…

About a moth ago I received an email from Hugo Lindgren, Editorial Director of New York Magazine (photo). He contacted me in regards to a story that he was writing about the economic future of upstate New York and the long-term political implications for New York City (case in point Joan n upstate?). What he was really looking for was someone that could show him around the Buffalo while discussing the ins and outs of various neighborhoods. I figured that this was a golden opportunity to show him the Buffalo that not many New Yorkers could even imagine. Lucky for…

Anyone that tells you that the Garden Walk is bad for business is fooling you. I heard that Buffalo was buzzing with people for the better part of the day. On my way home from the SmartCode Conference I passed Elliot, Jacob and Charlie’s lemonade stand. Upon seeing this micro-business I figured I could kill two birds with one stone: get a couple glasses of lemonade and inquire about the neighborhood business climate. Jacob (far left) told me that this year was much better than last year as far as sales were concerned. Lemonade sales today were healthy and by…

Last week we headed over to Shango in the University District for a brunch that I had been hearing about for a long time. Unfortunately by the time we got there they were out of their specials (good for Shango), so we stuck with the regular brunch menu. That was OK with us because the menu had a bunch of choices that sounded delicious. I love French toast and am constantly on the hunt for different types around town. Last Sunday, Shango was featuring the French toast stuffed with brie cheese. Yikes! When I saw that I knew we were…
