New developments are taking shape in Downtown Niagara Falls especially around the newly reconfigured Robert Moses Parkway that has begun to open up access to the long-neglected waterfront. The warmer weather has been a blessing for construction crews on the Doubletree by Hilton hotel on Buffalo Avenue under-construction. Developer Faisal Merani is undertaking the $27 million project that includes significant demolition at the former Fallside Hotel, taking down the entire two-story section fronting the Robert Moses Parkway, renovating the four-story section of the building and building a nine story tower overlooking the Niagara River. The redevelopment of the Former Moore Business Forms is well underway and is slated to open in Spring 2016 along with the newly reconfigured Robert Moses Parkway. Both developments are expected to give the visitors a friendly and inviting welcome into the downtown district. Niagara Falls City Council agreed on Monday to sell a land-locked half-acre City-Owned parcel to Sheraton at the Falls owner NFNY Hotel Management for $190,000. Although formal plans have not been announced by Michael Dicienzo, President of NFNY Hotel Management, City officials have confirmed that the intentions are to add a water park to the hotel that has in recent years developed a T.G.I. Plans to develop Niagara Falls’ first Skate Park have been steadily moving forward over the last couple months. In March the Niagara Falls City Council approved a $9,000 planning and design contract with Spohn Ranch Skateparks out of California to begin the project’s design. The preferred location chosen through the Community Development department’s outreach sessions is a site in Hyde Park along Hyde Park Boulevard adjacent Sal Maglie Stadium. The South Junior High School located at 561 Portage Road just across from Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital is slated to be redeveloped by CB-Emmanuel Realty into a mixed use building featuring loft style apartments with a central community area and over 18,000 square feet of commercial space available for lease. In total the project is estimated to cost $20 million with $5.7 million coming from New York States Low Income Housing Trust Fund program. A letter of intent has been signed between Canadian developer Harry Stinson and Matthew Shollar of Reception Hotel & Resorts for the iconic Hotel Niagara that has sat vacant in the heart of Downtown Niagara Falls for several years. Harry Stinson has struggled to attain financing for his vision of restoring the Hotel Niagara back to its 1920s glory as an independent destination hotel.
