Over 700 property violation cases that were brought to Housing Court in 2006 were found to be foreclosures. Unfortunately, many financial institutions bringing about such actions do not advise property owners that they are allowed to remain on the premises until the foreclosure process is finalized. This could take six months and up to two years. Hence, more abandoned properties are left on our neighborhood streets, with unpaid taxes and without even the simplest forms of maintenance that eventually leads to decay of the structure and the surrounding neighborhood. Look at the total enrollment of Buffalo’s 4-year colleges and universities. UB: 30,000 Canisius College: 5,000 Buffalo State: 11,000 Medaille College: 1500 D’Youville College: 2000 Total: 49,500 If this were one University, it would be the third largest campus in the country, behind only the mega Ohio State and Michigan State Universities. Yet, the neighborhoods surrounding our universities do not match any typical college town.

This past Friday, for the second time since this summer, Buffalo became a late town. Elmwood Avenue shops were open way past their bed time. Urban Clothing had a DJ spinning some tunes and livening up things. Globe Market was selling chili and cornbread. It was really pretty cool. So the question becomes, why not do this more often, like every Friday and Saturday? Why not try to expand it to Hertel and Allentown as well.

So, there I am, attempting to create some overlay maps of abandoned properties along with crime issues. I open up iGoogle Locali and notice something strange.
