Wellness has many definitions, and the varied members of the new Buffalo Wellness Cooperative work together to cover quite a few. The wellness center serves as space for massage, meditation, worship services and so much more. Their grand opening is this weekend and it includes, among other things, massage demonstrations, a Sufi ceremony, yoga class and lots of healthy food and dancing. Buffalo Wellness Cooperative is located at 640 Breckenridge n behind Dolciis and right off Elmwood Avenue. A $5 donation is requested. Something was nagging at me about the New York Times article earlier this week on the flight of young adults from Upstate. It highlighted a very real problem but didnit consider it in a larger (and I think more meaningful) context. Certainly the dynamic of losing young people is a problem that needs to be addressed economically as well as culturally to attract and retain that demo Upstate, and, because this is an urbanized region, itis a dynamic that has greater impact on places like Buffalo, but the article was a bit myopic and didnit consider population loss with another…

View Slideshow No. 1 View Slideshow No. 2 The Richardson Complex in Buffalo, NY is an incredible building with a dramatic history. From its architect, to its history, to its ruined present condition and unknown future, the structure is rife with puzzles, mysteries, and dark stories. The non-profit group Endangered History is creating its first full-length documentary film about the Buffalo State Hospital, which proposes to explore the past, present, and future of the facility. It will do so factually, with an historical basis, but also explore cultural and social issues surrounding the complex as well to provide a full…

Despite increases in local per capita income and a flurry of encouraging signs for our economy, there are still those who continue to struggle economically. There are so many Western New Yorkers – our friends, relatives, and neighbors – in need, and countless worthy individuals, organizations and agencies which try to meet those needs. Not a day goes by that I don’t receive a solicitation of some sort, either through the mail or via the internet. I wish I could help them all, but unfortunately I just can’t do it. Buffalo is a remarkably generous city, and I’ll bet many…

Last year Buffalo hosted an Infringement Festival (our first!) and let me tell you, it was a huge smash success. In fact, the final performances had scarcely ended before people – audiences and artists alike – were looking ahead to this year’s festival. The 2006 Festival is still a ways off (July 27 through August 6) but you can get a sneak peak at a special Infringement Festival fundraiser on Friday, March 31 at Nietzsche’s. The show begins at 9:30 p.m. and will include music, performance art, poetry, multimedia and more, all taking place on not one but two stages.…

Buffalo’s Bicycle culture is strong and growing. Over the last few years there has been a resurgence of bicycles and their role as a part of the city’s renaissance has been recognized. Programs such as Buffalo Blue Bicycle and Recycle-A-Bicycle, businesses such as Zippy Delivery messenger service, and the newly created Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board has given a fresh breath into defining Bicycles and their place in our city. The Mardi Gras Big Fat Bike Ride continues the positive momentum created recognizing cyclists as a prominent aspect of our city’s culture and identity.

Over the course of this week, weill be fixing things, adding new content as well as continuing to migrate content to the new site, not sleeping and working on future enhancements and additions. Weid like to thank…
