I adore Christmas. It’s my favorite time of year. I start my Christmas shopping in April and by November my gifts are usually wrapped and my handmade cards addressed and ready to be mailed. This is right about the time that I start making my gifts for the masses. Envy me or hate me, but at least I’m willing to share some of my secrets. The one thing that kills me about Christmas is that I usually end up spending money on people I don’t know all that well. By the time my credit card bill rolls around in January,…

Tentet/Octet has familiarized the streets of Buffalo with their progressive soul sound used in experimental theater, rearrangements of classical and jazz compositions and live film score. But somethings has changed–they seem to have become larger. “Since the summer, the ensemble has grown in numbers and direction, developing an identity of its own outside of it’s beginnings. The Reactionary Ensemble formed as an extension of us,” says T. Tristan Trump, Tenet/Octet originator. The Reactionary Ensemble group the allows larger scale performances than the original duo could take on. In addition the group has also started to integrate video loops, a more…

One of the BRO responders felt our Peace Bridge series a bit slanted and suggested others readers go visit www.politicsNY.net for the real side of the story. The point is, as a moderator with fierce opinions himself, my aim is to go to any length to get out the entire story—even if it means bringing the devil himself to the podium. So when I visited the suggested site, it was my friend Judy Einach’s story the reader was referring to. I called Judy and congratulated her on her new good fortunes at that web entity, and asked if we could…

It’s hard to imagine what cross border life was like before there came The Four Bridges of Niagara. The vast estate cottages that line the beaches from Fort Erie’s Point Abino and beyond were once home for entire summers to Buffalonians who made their way in early June with summer trunks loaded with vacation goods for the long stay across the border, not to have to return by boat until the coming of September’s chills. Then, one by one, The Four Bridges were built. You have four bridges to choose from to cross between the United States and Canada on…

This one is almost too good to be true. I just got off the phone with Cash Cunningham and he has big, big news regarding the sale of the 20-acre Freezer Queen property. It was purchased for $3,000,000 by a few investors, one being Ontario Specialty Contracting, with the intentions of… get ready… condos, retail, and hotel. The new owners are looking into keeping the current structure, but it will take further review to see if that is feasible. “The aerials are amazing,” Cash told me. “It’s an incredibly large piece of land and the development bodes extremely well for…

The Hunt Real Estate signs went up in the windows of the former Lab Indigo storefront today. The building, located at the corner of Elmwood and Breckenridge, was purchased by Hunt with the intentions of creating a ‘Home Base’ in the heart of one of the city’s most vibrant commercial and residential neighborhoods. Associate Broker and Branch Leader, Bret Llewellyn, was at the new headquarters today and shared his thoughts about the hi-profile move. “Hunt has never had such a big presence in the city as it does now. It is our intention to embrace the neighborhood. We looked hard…

“Al, are you really, absolutely sure about this?” I asked my longtime friend over lunch today by the waterfront. Seventeen year Buffalo Councilman and Former NY State Senator Alfred Coppola loves Buffalo, Buffalonians, and he truly, painstakingly loves the little white house he bought 25 years ago simply to preserve for our history. It was this past mid-summer when Al Coppola took me on a tour through the little white house. He beams with pride when he tells the story of its use during the Pan American Exposition. He smiles like an excited kid whenever he talks about his precious…

Buffalo might be a ways away from seeing a Metro Rail expansion to UB and the airport… and that’s a shame. While many people keep their hopes high that those expansions will take place sooner rather than later, there is a group of supporters who are beating the drum to move the plans forward at a quicker speed. Gladys Gifford is president of the Citizens Regional Transit Corporation (CRTC), a group that is dedicating themselves to everything and anything having to do with expanded service. Gladys stopped by yesterday to see if there might be an interest from BRO readers…
