The to-be renovated Sattler Theater at 512-16 Broadway could soon be surrounded by an “urban village.” In March, the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency designated Temple Community Development Corporation (TCDC), a subsidiary of Pentecostal Temple COGIC, developer for the former Buffalo Forge site which the City expects to purchase shortly. With approximately 14 acres, TCDC will be working on one of the largest development-ready sites in the city. A Cobblestone District commercial building has a new owner. J. Roger Trettel’s 1876 Buehl Block LLC purchased the two-story brick building at 49 Illinois Street last Monday. Roger has two property renovations under his belt downtown- the Buehl Block and adjacent 285 Ellicott Street. Plans for the property located behind HSBC Arena and Buffalo Rising’s offices are not set but Trettel reportedly is not likely to convert the 8,888 sq.ft. property to residential use.

The former Lutheran Nursing Home property at 1040 Delaware Avenue is again being targeted for a residential project. This time around, the existing building may come down and replaced with apartment or condo unts according to today’s Buffalo News. Plaza Group sold the vacant property to 1040 Delaware, LLC yesterday for $400,000. Plaza Group had owned the Delaware Avenue property located between W. Utica and Lexington Avenue since March 2000. In September 2006, the developer announced plans to convert the property into approximately 45 apartments. The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) is hosting kick-off ‘community work sessions’ Tuesday and Wednesday to work with Fruitbelt and Allentown neighborhood residents and stakeholders on implementing plans for the area. Back in November of 2007, almost 500 people attended the world premiere of Release the Funny at the Riviera Theatre. There are a couple of Buffalo-based opportunities coming up to catch the flick, one of which is during the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival (BNFF) this month. Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is having its second Buffalo Small Press Book Fair on Saturday, March 22nd from 12-6pm. The event serves as a chance for writers, artists, and cultural workers from the Great Lakes Region to come together and showcase their wares. The focus is on Herman Melville and James Joyce, and bringing up James Joyce brings up an interesting fact about Buffalo. The Poetry Collection at the University at Buffalo (UB) is the largest collection of Joyce’s working papers in the entire world. There are over 10,000 scanned pages available for viewing in the reading room of the Poetry Collection. The papers are only available there because copyright restrictions prevent wider access.
