The Buffalo Sabres Hockeyfest is scheduled to begin bright and early at 8 AM tomorrow (Sunday, August 22nd). A tent sale featuring quirky memorabilia such as old goal lights will be on sale for crazed fans of the Blue and Gold. And no, there will be no Orange Aud seats available (which is a shame, as they’d fetch quite a price). You can check out a list of what they will be offering here. Meanwhile, the Sabres signed yet another tough guy – Jeff Cowan, also known as “The Brabarian.” This is not a misspelling; apparently, fans up in Canada…

The first day of Taste of Buffalo this year, while marred by the occasional rain, did nothing to stop people from coming out in droves for the event. Entering its 26th year, they welcomed 16 new restaurants and extended their reach from beyond WNY to include restaurants from Brockport, Rochester and Niagara to name a few. I spoke with Chairman Tom Muscarella: “We’re excited about having a total of 61 restaurants this year, it is a record. More fine dining places like Torches are going to be here and there are 3 culinary stages plus music to fit everyone’s tastes.” There…

We just got word from James, the Creamcyle pilot and newly crowned “David” of local street vendors, that the city doesn’t seem to care for him too much, although we have to admire his optimistic demeanor. Here’s what he had to say:”Met today with Buffalo Place and Licensing, Olmsted wasn’t present. Apparently any changes to the permit system would require legislation. Unfortunately there isn’t enough time to get that done this summer, with council going on break in August, so the City promised they’ll look into it over the winter. In the meantime, they offered to sell…

The Johnnie B. Wiley Sports Complex, long-neglected and badly in need of attention, will receive the restoration it deserves thanks to a new initiative by the mayor to appoint board members who will decide how the building will be renovated for the future. Currently, the facility falls inside the jurisdiction of the county, but has been managed by the Buffalo School District per the city/county parks agreement. After an assessment by Dinato Associates, a Request For Proposals (RFP) was issued. The School Board approved a construction contract of $1,967,309 that will be used for new artificial turf, site drainage, lighting,…

I lost count of how many times I was told to “Get out of here” after college. “Here,” in this example, means Buffalo. People always acted so militant about it. “Get out of here, you won’t find a job, trust me.” Wait. I won’t? Then what are you still doing here? That phrase was thrown at me most during my senior year of high school, when all I wanted to do was go to college and party. Later, I decided that I would be open to moving away if something opened up. Since I graduated, I’ve enjoyed living in the…

A few months ago, I updated you on Buffalo’s top soccer development program. Buffalo City Football Club is in its first year under new management and coaching, and is currently in first place in their division, with the toughest part of their schedule ahead of them before the playoffs in mid-July, which will be played at Nichols. Not bad for their first year. As impressive as that is, the team is also proud to announce that Bobby Shuttleworth, Nichols graduate and former UB goalkeeper, has signed a MLS contract with the New England Revolution. They’ll certainly miss Shuttleworth, but hope…

I’m all about clever, effective advertising. When we found out about this ad campaign in Portland, Oregon (not Maine, but Go Pirates!), we thought it was just great. Urban trees that adorn city sidewalks were transformed from simple foliage to a clever ad that passersby were unable to pass without giving into curiosity. By simply wrapping the base of the tree with a fiberglass orange container, the trees became carrots that advertised the local farmer’s market. Since we have our own farmers market, this idea could be implemented effectively in Buffalo, but it shouldn’t have to be limited to produce. …

Sometimes being a Buffalonian requires that you to be defensive about your city.  Outsiders often pass us off as living in a dead, uncultured, broken place, and question our reasons for living here.  And while we understand that we’re on the rise economically, there’s a great deal of beauty and culture and delicious food here that makes Buffalo a truly wonderful place to live.  If you ever need to direct a misguided outsider to an assortment of reasons why Buffalo isn’t exactly the place they believe it is, show them I Heart Buffalo.  The site is for people to put…
