Opening night is normally a series of highs and lows. Anticipation, nerves and excitement go hand and hand, for a new playwright it can be agony. Wondering how people perceiving your work, your words, your motivations. Until the curtain closes and there is an eruption of applause, you’re on pins and needles; a sign of a good show is the audience feeling that anticipation as well. I was able to attend opening night of “Triangles” at Road Less Traveled Productions and it was a packed house and a wonderful night of theatre. I had the chance to speak with playwright…

The Nichols Upper School Theatre program will present Three Farces and a Funeral, adapted by Robert Brustein, based on the life and work of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. Three of Chekhov’s most loved and humorous farces, “The Proposal,” “The Bear” and “The Wedding,” are intercut with “knee plays” (short comedic skits that gel together the larger pieces) between Anton Chekhov and his wife Olga Knipper, an actress with the Moscow Art Theater and based on actual letters exchanged by the couple. Nichols Theatre teacher and director Kristen Tripp Kelley has been a fan of playwright Anton Chekhov’s work for a…

An absolutely perfect WNY summer’s day with a light cool breeze taking the edge off of the stinging August sun… an Olmsted park immaculately groomed… vendors hocking everything from Jerked Chicken to Catfish filet, and the incomparable Dr. Lonnie Smith on stage with his trio. It’s got to be Pine Grill Reunion time! The man under the turban that was sitting behind the organ had me totally mesmerized on a recent afternoon, and I was willfully under his spell. A clear focus with such an authentic, sympathetic smile; it was as if he played the breeze, shrugging his shoulders to…

There were so many exciting changes this year at the Taste of Buffalo, I was anxious to listen to the bands, watch the cooking demos and taste all of the wonderful food. I had so much fun on Saturday that I went back the next day; the turnout for both days was pretty incredible. The heat and threat of rain didn’t seem to deter anyone from attending the Taste. I saw many people who either watched the cooking demos (to get away from the crowds) for a while or sought shelter on a nice cool patch of grass while eating.…

There has been a lot of talk this year about the new cooking demonstration stages at this years Taste of Buffalo, which will be a very exciting addition to this years festivities, and hopefully be around for years to come. Downtown living is heading to new heights. The residential condominiums topping the newly-chistened Avant will have striking city and water views stretching from Niagara Falls to the Boston Hills. They will have matching prices too. The largest penthouse is expected to cost upwards of $1.4 million and the buzz on the street is that it will be far from the only unit priced in the seven figures. The $80 million redevelopment of the former Dulski federal building is being undertaken by UniQuest, a partnership of Uniland Development and Acquest Development.
