As we sat at Spot on Elmwood on a snowy Saturday morning for this interview, all of us noticed a recent edition of Artvoice with a cover picture taken by their mutual friend Christina Shaw. There were two remarkable aspects to this fact: 1) Christina was there when Bryan and Ashley began dating in NYC and 2) the picture featured Joseph Thomas, Sr. who I would be interviewing weeks later for a Fandemoneum Sports Museum piece. We are truly all connected to each other here! It was yet another unavoidable piece of objective evidence that Buffalo literally has 1.5 degrees of…

I’m Michael Weekes, Buffalo Rising Online contributor, and I want to build an exciting new home on the West Side, turning a vacant lot or two into a metaphor for a new sustainable life in Buffalo. After researching designs from companies including Flatpak, EcoSteel, Kieren Timberlake, PowerHouse, Blu Homes, Bluesky homes, Method Homes and Kaufmann, it’s time to find a site and work on the approval to execute a home that’s good for the earth as well as the soul. If you know of local individuals, organizations or agencies to help take this idea and make it a reality (for an individual)…

Maria Merlino spent an inordinate amount of time in the Chippewa bar district in her early twenties. She was not your typical overzealous patron; Maria spent her Buff State years running some of Buffalo’s premiere party spots. She helped to open and manage Mark Croce’s first major project, the Coliseum (1996) and after 5 years decided to take a parallel leap to Delaware’s Red Room to help run the show there.Currently, well established, Maria is the number one ranked regional Growth Hormone Therapy Manager for a large global health care company and wants to reciprocate. “I learned how to network…

Like any website with a comment button, we battle our fair share of trolls. But rather than run away from the challenges of commenting, we engage in the battle. Well, the folks behind the soon-to-be-launched BuffaloComedy.com are taking the battle to an entirely new level. Now, we’re not advocating violence against commenters. And even the incessant repeat trolls can rest assured that we won’t be handing out their address to the comment police (mostly because we don’t have their addresses). But, if you are one of the incessant trolls, let this video be a warning to you. The next time you…

From Queenseyes orginal post: “Like a blood-thirsty, gigantic reptile ripping through Tokyo, every three years thousands of winter-weary Buffalonians storm the Tri-Main Center for WNY’s most massive party. On March 29, get ready for more bands, more art, and more mayhem. The first TRIMANIA was big. The second was huge. The third will be a monster.” -TRIMANIA It’s kind like opening up a giant art studio complex to the public and amplifying the entire building… up to eleven. This is how the artists in the Tri-Main building continue to build exposure for the building and all of the artists that…

No, it’s not a freak bowling pin storm – it’s just the Buffalo Jugglers at their weekly gathering in Delaware Park. Each Monday the jugglers arrive at the park bearing bowling pins, tennis balls, yo-yos, batons, diablos and pretty much anything else that can be thrown into the air and caught. I didn’t notice any chainsaws but I wouldn’t be surprised. The group is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and judging from the crowd I’d say they’re here to stay. The statue of Abraham Lincoln by the Rose Garden was surrounded by jugglers of all ages and skill levels…

See, that’s the thing about Buffalo. You write one little piece about throwing some petunias into a window box, and the next thing you know Newell promotes you to “Garden Correspondent” and you’re representing Buffalo Rising Online at the Garden Walk’s media party. Well, that’s ok. I may not know a whole lot about gardening, but I know how to hit a party and this one was a beauty. The setting was the lovely Elmwood Village home of Garden Walk committee member Jim Charlier. In attendance were gardening aficionados from Western New York and all over the country in town…
