A major new monograph has been released on the work of architectural genius Louis Sullivan. The book, titled The Complete Architecture of Adler & Sullivan, is just that – a complete document of all of Sullivan’s over 250 building commissions, existing and demolished. The book is Published by the Richard Nickel Committee with the University of Chicago Press. Its authorship is credited to a team consisting of Aaron Siskind, John Vinci, Ward Miller and Richard Nickel. Imported From Detroit was easily one of the best Super Bowl ads on Sunday night. I would have gone out on a limb and said it was THE BEST ad if it had trimmed the Eminem part at the end a bit. The ad for Chrysler (ironically a foreign-controlled company now) is a major break from mainstream car marketing in that it used down-and-out unglamorous Detroit as the basic sales pitch for the car – no mountains, no palm trees, no exotic architecture, no beautiful women – just Detroit as it is dark and grim and very compelling visually. Included here are three images of the same building at dramatically different phases of its existence. It opened on West Utica between Linwood and Main Street in the 1930s as the Stratford Arms Hotel. It has a stripped down Tudor style architecture, a type of simplified historicism that was popular at that time. In a way it is an early form of branding architecture, as its name and architecture referenced each other. It is an unspectacular building but is a pleasant piece of the street fabric. This Thursday night expect to see music fans with glow sticks and bodies covered in glow paint coming from the direction of Noir nightclub. The club hosts a weekly eighteen-and-over live house and dubstep music night.
