Minrad International will be relocating from 847 Main Street to a new facility in Orchard Park. Thatis some good news and bad. The good news is Smartpill Diagnositcs will be expanding to occupying the space Minrad is vacating. The bad news, Minrad canit take the building at 847 Main to Orchard Park with it. Minrad, a medical manufacturer, is moving its headquarters and 81 jobs this summer to a 37,000 sq.ft. building in the Quaker Center Industrial Park off Route 20-A in Orchard Park. Their new building and 847 Main are both owned by The Krog Corp.

The final piece of the Portside Condominium complex in Waterfront Village is underway. Just 18 years after construction started. In 1988, Portside was envisioned as a 58-unit townhouse project spread across five acres. Construction of the brick and cedar-shingled units ground to a halt after developer Twin Lakes Associates experienced slow sales. Many of the units, originally priced from $250,000 to $399,000, did not have a clear waterfront view but overlooked a 250 foot-long reflecting pool. Marine Midland Bank foreclosed on the New York City-based developer in 1992 with just seven units completed.

ArtSpace has reached a significant milestone- the properties needed for the $16 million artist loft project in Midtown have been acquired. The five-story Buffalo Electric Vehicle Company Building and adjacent building at 1219-33 Main Street were sold by Agassiz Holdings Inc. for $500,000. Built in 1914, the brick structure will be renovated into 36 live/work units plus 13,000 sq.ft. of commercial space at street level for offices and other space for arts organizations and related businesses.

Iim straying over the city line again, but by just a few hundred feet. The former Lackawanna Iron and Steel (later Bethlehem Steel) Office Building has been vacant for over twenty years with no reuse plan in sight. Constructed in 1901, the Beaux Arts style building is located on Hamburg Turnpike (Route 5) at the northeast corner of the sprawling 1300-acre former steel plant complex. The building, like the city it is located in, has seen better days yet remains defiantly majestic. It has even been identified as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This is the fouth installment in a series. Another city is contemplating removal of an offensive waterfront highway, this time in Seattle. The Puget Sound metropolis is studying various proposals to replace the hazardous, 53-year-old Alaskan Way Viaduct along its waterfront. The 2001 Nisqually earthquake left the double-decked expressway in immediate need of replacement, and the preferred alternative is burying the expressway underground with a parkway and greenspace at street-level. According to the project website, the Alaskan Way Viaduct was originally built in the 1950’s to carry 65,000 vehicles per day but currently carries 110,000. In the mid-1990’s studies showed…

Not on the long-vacant NFTA waterfront property, but nearby! Cobey Inc. is investing $10 million in a new plant at the Lakeside Commerce Park. Construction on the 90,000 sq.ft. facility is well underway and targeted for completion before the end of the year. The plant joins CertainTeed as a tenant in the industrial park along the Union Ship Canal off Route 5 near the Buffalo-Lackawanna border.

Cash Realty & Auctions has just expanded their Midtown Main Street holdings. On Wednesday, Cash Cunningham’s 270 West Main Inc. closed escrow on the 28,000 sq.ft. building at 1291 Main Street, corner of Bryant. The property is occupied by Autopia car repair. While it is unknown what, if any, changes are planned for the property, Cash Realty & Auctions needs a new headquarters. It is currently operating out of the Packard Building at 1325 Main Street. That site is scheduled to be converted into 40 apartments and first floor commercial space by Regan Development.
