For a very long time in Buffalo there have been two options: you’re either blue collar or white collar. Pick your path and proceed to your pre-determined fate… However, in the past few years, the local startup community has been steadily growing. With grass-root initiatives and more formal incentives currently underway, this is arguably the busiest time for startups in Buffalo’s history. Particularly, this month (October) has been pumped up with entrepreneurial focused programming and announcements. The 4th Buffalo Startup Weekend is taking place this weekend, the 43 North finalists do their live pitches next week, FIKA Buffalo and Startup…

This Saturday night, Leroy Townes will be sharing the stage with Ten Cent Howl. This isn’t their first time playing together, and it definitely won’t be their last. Both bands hold that distinct and eclectic Americana sound that has been oh so prevalent these days in the local Buffalo music scene – blending traditional folk, rock, country and blues through a vast library of great original tunes. Both of the band’s lead singers (Leroy Townes and Bill Smith) grew up in the Southern Tier and now live in Buffalo, and they credit that rural upbringing for their love of this…

I feel very fortunate to be living in Buffalo at THIS very moment, and you should too. I grew up here, went to school here, and then after a couple of years of living elsewhere – I finally moved back as a “Buffalo Boomerang”. During my many travels, I’ve always been able to identify the things that make Buffalo unique. The majority of those “things” are absolutely wonderful, but there was always one thing I knew was uniquely negative. Unlike every other city I have been to, downtown is NOT the heartbeat of our city. Generally, when people have very…

Things are going very well for CoworkBuffalo. After gaining and maintaining members since opening in May 2012, the natural progression was to relocate to meet demand. Formerly residing above Spot Coffee on Delaware and Chippewa (see more), you can now find them in a larger space on the “newly renovated” 600 block of Main Street (Pierce Building). While the productive energy and camaraderie of the old space lives on in the new location, it will definitely be more accessible to those outside of the close-knit ‘techy clique’ here in Buffalo. Even the mere fact that CoworkBuffalo is now ground level…

If you grew up playing organized sports or finally got drafted to a bar league team in adulthood, then you understand what it means to have a kickass uniform. Uniforms might not enhance any athletic ability, but they do add a layer of confidence. Through tryouts and pre-season practices, waiting to take a knee and hear what number your coach assigns you is one of the most anticipated moments in a child’s sporting career. That uniform symbolizes that you’ve earned your spot. Farm Team Apparel wants to help more kids experience that sportsman’s right of passage. Their mission is to…

One of the newest tenants setting up shop in the Larkin Commerce Building is the graphic design firm, Mr. Smith. You can find them sharing a “creative space” with Steamroller Press in suite 403. Don’t let the generic sounding name fool you. In fact, the name is deliberate to invoke a sense of mystery, and direct the attention onto the brand they are hired to build or expand. Less than a year old (est. April 2013), the Mr. Smith agency has been steadily building clientele. If you’re familiar with the Black Market Food Truck, Farm Team Apparel, Thrifty Car Rental of Buffalo…
