Tokyo Shanghai Bistro opened last Friday at 494 Elmwood Avenue between Hodge and West Utica, and business is booming already. The menu is quite extensive, with Japanese and Chinese options including sushi, and an unlimited buffet that is eat-in ($6.95) or take-out ($5.50/lb). Because there is so much on it, I recommend picking up a take-out menu, which is the same as the eat-in menu, as a sort of study guide – and because it has a a coupon for $5.00 off on a tab of $30 or more until October 31st.The only problem with Tokyo Shanghai is deciding what to…

Buffalo, New York’s unemployment is at 8.9 percent, bringing it from 77th to 35th ranked in a portfolio.com snapshot of the nation’s top 100 labor markets. In a piece that calls the market dismal, one can’t help but notice that some of the hardest-hit post-industrial areas are some of the first places to recover (Rochester, Buffalo, Pittsburgh). On the other hand, cities that were development Meccas before the economic slide (Phoenix, Greensboro, Reno), have fallen drastically on the list. Detroit, still reeling from the most recent car-manufacturing cuts, a fallout of the nationwide economic crisis, stayed at 100, and many towns in Ohio…

Club Diablo, at 517 Washington Street is all you’d expect from Jesse Zuefle, the former owner of Second Skin and one time Continental Nightclub security chief. In this week’s Buffalo Rising Roundtable discussion, we invited Buffalo Olmsted Conservancy Chair Elect Anne Harding Joyce into the WBFO studio to talk about last week’s announcement that Erie County and the City of Buffalo would not renew their agreement in which the County would continue to maintain City parks. Within this agreement, the conservancy oversaw the maintenance of the Olmsted Parks, circles and parkways. The general consensus is that the parks have never looked better than in the last 5 years while this agreement was in place. Joyce is hopeful that the city will allow the conservancy to play a major…

One of our favorite local painters, AJ Fries, will be opening a show of new paintings on Friday, November 6th, at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center. On top of his renditions of fast food packaging and sex toys, Fries’ new show comprises a lot of what he does, including land and sky scapes. When asked what the series is about, Fries said it was best described in Hallwalls Visual Arts Curator John Massier’s comment as follows: In a series of new black and white paintings, Buffalo artist AJ Fries delves deep into contemplative and seemingly banal instances in a gesture to distill…

We know a stolen bicycle isn’t big news in the big city, and judging by reader reaction to a post we once put up about some cats that were lost and in need of meds in Allentown, we were reluctant to post this plea. But come on, 17 years with the same bike? That’s a long time. And thievery, especially where it concerns someone’s dedication to bicycling, thus reducing their carbon footprint, plainly pisses us off. Plus, wouldn’t it feel good to spot this bike and be the one who helped get it back to its rightful owner? So here goes:…
