Author: BRo Guest Authors

It’s not unusual for authors to come and go. Guest authors range from collegiate interns to writers who will be contributing for a short stint of time. Guest authors might also have a series in mind. Authors are encouraged to submit their ideas to BRO (Buffalo Rising Online), upon which time we will work with the writer towards a productive end.

Poet: Justin Karcher | Photo of Shea’s: Joe Cascio It’s Sunday morning and me and Carly oversleep And we’re late to Chris’s 50th birthday party setup. She quickly sends him a text and I put on last night’s suit And we race out the apartment to Alleyway Theatre, A couple of shooting stars who always pick the wrong time To pull the cosmic trigger. The problem with shooting stars Is timing. You need a blanket of black To really make your mark, for people To look up and see the last sighs Of silence before the explosions Take root and…

Author: Seth Triggs For a large portion of Buffalo’s existence, the city has been an important transportation hub. While Buffalo is well-known as the terminus of the Erie Canal, a slightly more obscure fact is that the city was a major railroad hub. Indeed, for various periods of time, Buffalo was the second most important railroad hub after Chicago. We can see these vestiges of that glorious railroad history throughout our community, whether in the numerous overbuilt railway overpasses, or tracks and routes lying fallow for decades. Eventually, that heritage largely built by steam gave way to dieselization, and efficiencies…

Author: Jim Charlier Ever wonder how a Frank Lloyd Wright interior comes together? It’s a big job for people that are part historian, sleuth, archivist, preservationist, researcher, and mindreader. This is a rare opportunity to see what goes into restoring an historic interior, and how to get it right. Frank Lloyd Wright designed a variety of “summer houses” set along lakeshores, riverbanks, and forests. Planned as seasonal retreats, their schemes were less formal than Wright’s urban and suburban dwellings, and this simplicity was most often seen in the design of their interiors. Mr. Perkins will present examples from across the…

Author: Brian Hayden There are plenty of manufacturing jobs available in Buffalo these days, but finding the right employees for those positions is no easy task. By 2020, there will be a workforce shortage of nearly 16,700 manufacturing jobs in the Buffalo region, according to the New York State Department of Labor. This number is the result of a long-stemming, generational shift away from young people choosing manufacturing careers and shows the imperative need to focus on workforce development in the years ahead. Workforce development will be the central discussion point at the Buffalo Niagara Partnership’s Manufacturing Month kickoff event…

Author: Megan DiGesare In Buffalo with its blossoming food scene there are a plethora of restaurants to consider when trying to pick a great spot for dinner. This time I was looking for a restaurant that would be perfect for a group of eight for my sister’s bachelorette dinner. I wanted to show the ladies what it is like to be a food blogger, and set them up with a tasting dinner. I reached out to Mike Shatzel, owner of Coles, Allen Burger Venture, Liberty Hound, The Moor Pat, and formerly Blue Monk Buffalo (one of mine and my sister’s favorites) to see if…

Author: Paul Fanara Everyone knows Yelp.com for being a business review site, and an excellent resource to find a great new restaurant, or check out how other people feel about the hotel you’re considering for your vacation, but there is another even more altruistic side to this community building company. In 2011 Yelp invested their own company equity into establishing the Yelp Foundation, with the mission of supporting local charitable organizations, and activities that address the needs of their local communities. This mission includes helping to increase access to information, educational opportunities, economic development, freedom of expression, and with that,…
