Author: BRo Guest Authors

It’s not unusual for authors to come and go. Guest authors range from collegiate interns to writers who will be contributing for a short stint of time. Guest authors might also have a series in mind. Authors are encouraged to submit their ideas to BRO (Buffalo Rising Online), upon which time we will work with the writer towards a productive end.

Author: Schyler Norton Do you have a dog that has more energy than you can handle? Do you wish that there was a place that would offer sports training, but for dogs? Well, Canine Sports Complex has just what you need. Jeannine Jay bought Canine Sports Complex eleven years ago, when it was already a place for dogs to learn obedience and agility. Jeannine took the space and expanded upon that by improving the already great space, and adding more space for training. Jeannine did not begin as an obedience instructor, as soon as she bought the building she began…

Author: Schyler Norton The ironic thing about writing a story about mushrooms is that I am allergic. I loved mushrooms, before one Christmas when they betrayed me. Mushrooms however have not betrayed Robbie Gianadda. Robbie grows mushrooms in a basement under a large building on Mason street, where he has been the owner of Flat #12 Mushrooms for 2 years. Walking by you’d pass it if you did not have Robbie with you, since there are no signs indicating that Flat #12 is located there. Once in the cellar, there are long plastic bags of straw, stacked like firewood, and…

Author: Chris Candelaria In January of 2016, Governor Andrew Cuomo enacted an executive order which gave local law enforcement across the state the power to take homeless people off the streets and place them in shelters when temperatures go below freezing. In a short amount of time, this order has gotten both significant praise and relevant concern. This law can be beneficial to an individual that is a danger to themselves or others. This holds true in cases where there is potential drug use or mental illness. It allows people with no place to go, access to temporary shelter and warming…

Author: Schyler Norton Everyone loves local produce, but if you live in the north, buying local in the winter is nearly impossible, until just recently. With the advent of vertical farming, restaurants and markets are finally able to source locally throughout the year (for certain farm products). Now, one local farmer is taking the scene to the next level. What started out as a small hobby has grown into much more. Richard Stapleton of GrowTech Industries started growing crops in upcycled shipping containers two years ago. Since then, Stapleton has expanded from his original ten foot container and now has…

Author: Schyler Norton This Friday, January 13th is the start of the fourth North American Championship (The Cup). The North American Championship is a hockey tournament that takes place over the Martin Luther King weekend. The tournament founder, Richard Zacher, hopes that with the help and support of the Western New York community this will become Buffalo’s version of a “Silver Stick” or “Golden Horseshoe” tournament – both are prestigious and long running competitive youth hockey events in Canada. The tournament was founded in 2013, and the first event was in January of 2014. What started as a round robin weekend…

Author: Schyler Norton The last time Buffalo Rising covered Buffalo Brewing Company (BBC) was in 2014 during its Kickstarter campaign. We are happy to report that BBC is doing very well. Since opening on July 30th 2016 in Larkinville, Buffalo Brewing Company beer demand has been higher than supply, leaving the company unable to pursue sales to restaurants and bars. Of course, I can think of worse problems for a business owner to have, realizing that sometimes organic growth is best. John Domres, sole proprietor of Buffalo Brewing Company, started brewing beer 10 years ago when a friend gave him…

Author: Eric Dacey If you live in South Buffalo you can smell a certain something in the air. On a good day it’s Cheerios, on a bad day it’s Sorrento Cheese! But recently there has been another smell that has everybody talking – the smell of change. South Buffalo has been doing some growing up as of late. A number of restaurants have been contributing to what should be considered a significant growth spurt. One of those restaurants, Blackthorn Restaurant, is majorly contributing to a change that all of Buffalo can be proud of – the beloved South Buffalo restaurant is…

Author: Schyler Norton Yesterday I took a ride to the Broadway Market, the East Side’s not-so-hidden-and-yet-sometimes-forgotten gem. I discovered, as I had not previously known, that the market is in fact open during times other than the holidays. Walking around inside it is easy to see that Buffalonians love their pierogies. Mark and Barbara Lancaster own Keeping Traditions Pierogi, and are one of four pierogi vendors inside the Broadway Market. Everyone in the pierogi business is friendly, but there is a healthy amount of competition among them. Mark told me that Keeping Traditions has the largest pierogies and the longest…
