Author: BRo Guest Authors

It’s not unusual for authors to come and go. Guest authors range from collegiate interns to writers who will be contributing for a short stint of time. Guest authors might also have a series in mind. Authors are encouraged to submit their ideas to BRO (Buffalo Rising Online), upon which time we will work with the writer towards a productive end.

This is the continuation of the “Off Broadway” article that was posted this past December. These are the memories of Alex Ramsey, who grew up on the city’s East Side. It is interesting to note that he has been living in Texas since 1977, but that his fondest memories are from his youth. Alex was born in 1956. “The cohesiveness of the neighborhood itself made it a truly special time and place to grow up in.” Growing up on the East Side, my parents were homebodies. Neither ever owned nor drove a car. So our outings were limited to long…

Author: Tony Zambito, JazzBuffalo After a rapid six-month struggle with an aggressive debilitating illness, Robert Merlin Davis succumbed to what his body could no longer sustain.  Davis died in Phoenix, Arizona.  Remarkably, Robert Davis did not let his mind or spirit be beaten.  We will continue to hear stories in the coming months of how Bob Davis, as he was called by some, continued to reach out to others.  Texting and Facebook messaging with his connections here in Buffalo and throughout the contacts he had across the country. Davis was a supportive presence in the jazz community.  And a fine…

This is the continuation of the initial “Off Broadway” article – the memories of Alex Ramsey, who grew up on the city’s East Side. It is interesting to note that he has been living in Texas since 1977, but that his fondest memories are from his youth. “The cohesiveness of the neighborhood itself made it a truly special time and place to grow up in.” Life as I clearly recall, way back when, took form in 1965, when we moved to the Club Romway building – 1334 Broadway. I was 9 years old. I remember glimpses from when I lived…

Author: Ryan Miller “I’m committed to making sure they stay here, but it has to be something that is smart for the taxpayers, as well.” Those were the words of Governor Kathy Hochul in a recent interview with the Buffalo News regarding the ongoing Buffalo Bills new stadium negotiations.  Hochul is wise to worry about the return on taxpayer investment for a project that will commit an unprecedented amount of State and County tax dollars (estimated at $1 billion) to build a football stadium for billionaires that could fund it on their own dime several times over. She is not…

Author: Lynda Schneekloth, Member Citizens to Save the Great Northern If the Great Northern Grain Elevator is demolished it will NOT be because it is dangerous or structurally unsound.  In fact, if demolished it will not be based on the condition of the building at all! Rather, it would be demolished on the legal grounds that the Commissioner of Permits and Inspection had acted ‘rationally’ on the information before him at the time he issued the Emergency Demolition. The only information he had before him was from ADM, “Submission Concerning Emergency Demolition Order Due to Safety,” and a drone flight…

Author: Erik Brady Buffalo gals, won’t you come out tonight Come out tonight, come out tonight Buffalo gals, won’t you come out tonight And dance by the light of the moon? Christine Baranski is a Buffalo gal. And on Wednesday night, the actress appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which in a postmodern world is one way to dance by the light of the moon. “You grew up in Buffalo, New York,” Colbert said. “How much, after all these years — because you kind of scream ‘Manhattan’ at this point — how much Buffalo girl is left in…

Author: Christina Abt Dearly beloved. We are gathered here today to get through this thing called life —     “Let’s Go Crazy” music and lyrics by Prince  Michele Johnson did more than get through life. She lived it with passion—for her family, her dogs, her community, those with less, those in need of more, and in rhythm with her favorite musician, Prince. While she grew up in Amherst, she spent her adult life on Buffalo’s East Side where she and her husband, Wendell, raised their children, James, Tony, Cassie and Destiny. It was also in that neighborhood where Johnson became…

Author: Lou Bordonaro A recent experience attending a Zoning Board of Appeals meeting for a variance application to construct a building got me thinking about the purpose of variances.  The project had already secured two variances to build on an oddly shaped lot where a building once stood, but it required an additional variance.  The variance was ultimately approved; however, a common refrain was that the Green Code was meaningless if variances are permitted.  Is this true?  I found looking for an answer to whether variances were bad was as clear as getting an answer to the question if gentrification…
