Article By Nate Drag, Great Lakes United:As my dog and I walked on Squaw Island on a chilly afternoon last month, I was able to get an up close look at the Niagara River. At that spot, nearly twenty percent of the world’s fresh surface water flows from the four upper Great Lakes, funnels together and eventually flow over the Falls and than onto Lake Ontario. With the significance of this location in mind, I considered the consequences of clogging up the point where Lake Erie meets the Niagara River with a man-made ice boom. Last month, Great Lakes United…

Last year, the Bufalo Sabres finished 10th in the Eastern Conference – two spots out of the playoffs – with 91 points. Going into tonight’s matchup with the Boston Bruins, the Sabres rank 3rd in the Eastern Conference with 69 points in 52 games – on pace for 109 points for the year. What explains this projected 18 point (or 9 wins) improvement? Have some of the Sabres key personnel – like Pominville, Connolly, and Roy – matured? Nope. Well, maybe, but that’s not the key variable. It’s all about Ryan Miller. As the most meaningful position in pro sports,…

With the complete arrival of winter in Buffalo, I decided to revisit a conversation we have had at Great Lakes United several months ago. One of the prominent features of the Buffalo winter scene is the Niagara River Ice Boom. The installation and removal of the Ice Boom marks a regular celebration of the changing seasons in this magnificent part of the Great Lakes ecosystem. And we were pleased to hear of the announcement earlier in the fall that the storage of the ice boom will be moved this upcoming year to free up prime waterfront space that could lead…

The changing of the calendar year is often time for reflection. With the dawn of the beginning of a century now ten years behind us, this year also allowed for greater review of time. How has the past year, and past decade, treated the natural wonder that sits at our doorsteps? With the 20th century a decade behind us, have we, as a community, a society, or individuals, embraced new strategies to face old and new ecological problems? Perhaps one of the biggest stories for the Great Lakes in 2009 was the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The Congressional approval of…

All the talk about neighborhoods (click here for map) prompted me to write down something that I do a lot of thinking about, the places, names, spaces, neighborhoods, communities in and around Buffalo. It has been kind of a hobby for me for years. What defines Buffalo, Kenmore, Tonawanda and Cheektowaga? Where are the walkable urban areas in the city or region? I always thought it was an interesting contradiction that Kenmore, along Delaware Avenue, was far more urban and appealing than the city itself, but the city was the ‘urban’ area. I remember doing some searching into our region’s history,…
