Located on the block of Genesee St. between Oak and Ellicott Streets is one of the oldest family-owned furniture stores in Buffalo – Scherer’s Furniture. First opening in 1897 (one block east from it’s current location), the store remained stationary until 1939 when the Scherer family business moved to 124 Genesee Street. For the past three years, one of the largest antiquarian bookstores in the nation has been in business right in the heart of Downtown Buffalo. Old Editions Book Shop at Huron and Oak Street stocks three floors of first editions, signed books, prints, posters, historical documents, magazines, post cards and so much more that it would be too much to include everything into this post. The American Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter and its September 11 Support Group will commemorate the victims of the 9-11 attacks during a September 11th Remembrance Vigil. Marking the fifth anniversary of the attacks, the vigil will be held on Sunday, September 10th at 5:00 p.m. at 786 Delaware Avenue (corner of Summer Street). Beginning Thursday, September 7th at 3:30 p.m., 3,000 flags will be placed on the front lawn of the American Red Cross, each flag representing a person who lost their life during the 9-11 attacks.
