With the holiday season upon us and ever growing excitement happening downtown, new developments abound, increasing the downtown workforce and residential base. When it comes to shopping, we often tend to focus on Elmwood, Allentown and Hertel Avenue as the premier city shopping districts. But, did you know that we have over seventy retailers spread all over downtown? That equals more retailers than all of Allentown. So, it’s about time we thought of downtown as a growing shopping destination once again. Following is a walk through some of what downtown has to offer when it comes to clothes and gifts.…

It’s getting to be that time of year again… one of the only times of year that we can break out of our own shell and become a character that we all secretly wish to be. Halloween allows us to don full costumed attire, while not being looked at in a strange way (well, depending on what you’re wearing I suppose). And let’s not forget, it’s not just Halloween that we have the chance to do this. We also have the World’s Largest Disco, masquerade parties (The Witches Ball is coming up), theater and film productions. Fall and winter is…

Several days ago I received a message from Mr. Carl Dennis asking if as a Board member I would support his effort to stop the Albright-Knox’s de-accessing process. The following was my reply: February 18, 2007 Dear Carl, In reply to your inquiry, yes I did vote for the actions you are objecting to, and did so with conviction. As a participant in the comprehensive Strategic Planning process for the Gallery several years ago, I believe I have a very well informed understanding of the Gallery’s historical trajectory, its fundamental mission, and how to effectively advance that mission, which I…

Upon returning from a visit to New York City and its art museums, I feel I must comment on the recent controversy over the sale of masterworks from the AKAG, ostensibly Buffalo’s vanguard of art stewardship. How interesting to compare tastes at nether ends of the Empire State. What a beautifully diverse menu of art there is to choose from in Manhattan. Any aspect of artistic endeavor can be found if one looks hard enough. The trendy and ephemeral coexisting marvelously with the tried and true. A cultural feast. Humanity. I remember, not long ago, I could enter the AKAG…

I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer. — Abe Lincoln Winter has finally come, and so the beer drinking continues apace- on the heels of some news from our friendly fave brewer from the great white north, I was sort of moved to wonder if there is a sales slump at Labatt & Molson during All-star week. In any case, for this post, I present a snippet of news, and a quick review……

One of Downtown Buffalo’s jewels sits in the heart of the Theatre District at 617 Main Street. Originally named “The Palace Arcade” when completed in 1892, the complex has since been branded “The Market Arcade” when re-opened in 1995. The Arcade was modeled after the Burlington Arcade in London (1819) and the Gallery Umberto in Naples (1890), and is considered to be the forerunner of contemporary suburban malls. The Arcade anticipated the national fascination with ancient Roman architecture that was stirred by the World’s Colombian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893.
