An historic building located at a busy gateway to downtown has a new owner with plans to give it a much needed facelift and a new use. Today Roger Trettel purchased 133-135 S. Division Street located at the southeast corner of S. Division and Elm streets across from the E.C.C. Flickinger Athletic Center and Erie County Public Safety Center. The five-story, 23,000 sq.ft. Gutman Building was built in 1909 by Nathan Gutman and William Sperling for the manufacture of men’s and boy’s trousers. In 1910, Bates Jackson Printers and Engravers occupied a portion of the building. By 1919 Gutman and…

The Urban Habitat Project (UHP) located on the grounds of the Buffalo Central Terminal is less than a year old but has already exceeded designers’ expectations. The UHP was created to demonstrate: biodiversity, native regional habitats, soil remediation, several plant communities, ecosytems that benefit birds, bees, various beneficial insects and an array of resident mammals that exist near the site. The UHP is a working habitat. A large grove of pine trees, hawthorns, native shrubs, and vast meadows of grasses and wildflowers have been specifically designed and selected to meet specific site criteria.

Word on the street is that the Texas Red Hots property, two connected buildings at 5-7 Genesee Street, could be demolished due to structural issues. That set off a debate amongst property owners, politicians and others with an interest in the block on whether that is a good idea and what should become of the site if the building is removed. In May, Ellicott District Council Member Darius G. Pridgen requested that the Department of…
