Greg Johnson, a teacher at Buffalo Public School #17, is on the committee for the Tour de Cure for the American Diabetes Association (ADA). In an effort to help the ADA and donate to the Tour de Cure, he managed to get nine Buffalo Public Schools and Niagara County schools to take part in a coin drive. “I faxed letters to all the schools in Buffalo and Niagara County. Next year we’re hoping more people partake and make this even better,” says Johnson. The schools managed to raise more than $4,000 for the ADA. Johnson’s school came in first for…

Back in April, some of you might remember that the Binational Tourism Alliance (BTA) held a summit in the Adam’s Mark Hotel. The summit centered on discussions of how to eliminate the barriers to cross-border tourism development. The BTA is going to be holding one of the first of several roundtable discussions this summer. Back in 2002, Joy Rose was living in Westchester, NY looking for a venue to play her music. Rose wanted to create a venue for herself to play music but that would also feature people like her. That little thought turned into a concert, dubbed “Mamapalooza.” It featured a one night event on the lower East Side of NYC with just ten bands. Though Aurora Waldorf School is in West Falls, NY, they have early childhood programs at the Unity Church at 1243 Delaware Avenue. The school runs a satellite program in the furnished basement of the church, taught by Judy Frizland. The Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority (BFSA) was created in July 2003, and as part of their statute they have certain requirements to get the budget out. They have to do it in ten days and they have to have a public forum accessible to as many people as possible, amongst others requirements. According to Marty Biniasz, Forgotten Buffalo wasn’t originally meant for tours. “It started off as a website that I founded five years ago,” he says. However, it wound up being a host of different themed tours that takes Buffalonians all across the region to places that have been lost over the ages. People on the West Side and the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) are keeping their fingers crossed as Tuesday, April 29th approaches. That night will be when the 21st Century Fund picks among four finalists the recipient of $100,000 grant at the Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. If you’re interested in seeing the future of playwriting, be sure to head to Shea’s Smith Theatre for the annual Write To Be Heard competition. Now in its tenth year, this event showcases the winner and two runner-ups by performing their plays. The participants are high school students from grades 8-12 and a select committee of high school students, called a dramaturgy, chooses the winners. 20 years ago, Anita Williams was sick of seeing her neighborhood travel downhill, so she decided to take action and hold an event and called it “Takin’ It To The Streets.” She could have never imagined that this year would mark the 20th annual Takin’ It To The Streets this August 16th and 17th in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
