In an effort to make obtaining season golf passes to the Erie County golf courses easier, staff at both county courses have put aside time to sell and process passes on site.   “To improve customer service, we are bringing the golf pass system to you,” Erie County Parks Commissioner James Hornung said. Last year, the courses combined to host 70,000 rounds of golf, and Elma Meadows will unveil a new feature this spring – a driving range. Name-brand consumer electronics, business technology, office products, and furniture will now be a viable option for non-profits that may have considered some of these items unreachable before now. Assemblyman Sam Hoyt has planned his annual budget town meeting for 10AM on Saturday, February 21st at the Polish Cadets Hall (927 Grant Street, corner of Grant and Amherst Streets). Hoyt intends for the two-hour meeting to focus primarily on the 2009-2010 budget proposal made by Governor David Paterson. Laurie Tanner of the WNY Peace Center is planning an exhibit at B West Studio (148 Elmwood Avenue). The exhibit will run from April 3rd to May 3rd. Tanner asks artists to submit images that revolve around the idea of peace. Politically-centered pieces are also acceptable. Tanner promises that she will not censor anyone, but asks that any violent images in a piece be kept to a respectable level. Artists may submit between three and 10 pieces, depending on size. The annual gorge-fest of the summer, the Taste of Buffalo, is looking for local talent to take over the stages and perform. Dancers, musicians, jugglers, magicians, mimes and clowns will be spread across three stages on Delaware Avenue, entertaining passers by, while they stuff face. As part of their “Resistance and Recovery” tour, Workers from Republic Windows and Doors who staged and won a six-day strike in Chicago will be the centerpiece of a public forum  being held from 5:30-7PM this Thursday February 12th at the Lafayette Presbyterian Church located at 875 Elmwood Avenue.        The workers and UE (United Electrical Workers) members waged the sit-in strike in December of 2008 in response to the closing of their plant with a mere three days notice. My father was an 8th grade math teacher at Elmwood Franklin. He used to own a t-shirt emblazoned with a portrait of Albert Einstein and under the physicist’s face, the shirt read “Math Teachers Count”.  Last weekend, the students at Tapestry Charter School proved that in addition to math teachers, students count pretty well too. The school took home the gold at last weekend’s 2009 MATHCOUNTS Regional Competition, with one 8th grade student, Eliza Feero, placing first overall.
