One of the first ‘green’ parking lots in the City of Buffalo has been installed at the 257 Lafayette Center conversion project. The three-story, 34,320-sq.ft. former Catholic Academy school is being converted into 20 two-bedroom units at approximately 825 square feet each, 7,000 sq.ft. of office space and 4,000 sq.ft. for a day care center that will be leased and operated by the Waldorf School. The conversion project is being undertaken by architect Karl Frizlen and contractor Paul Johnsons’ 257 Lafayette LLC. The striking blue façade that I (prematurely) posted about a few weeks ago is getting a dash of color. Renowned local artist Ani Hoover is turning the façade of the Starlight Studio and Art Gallery into a vibrant work of art. The art studio at 340 Delaware Avenue, just blocks from Allentown, is directly across the street from Babeville. Established in 2005 by the Learning Disabilities Association of Western New York (LDA of WNY), Starlight Studio and Art Gallery opened its doors as the first art studio for people with disabilities in Buffalo. Starlight Studio provides individuals with the opportunity…

The two-story building at the northwest corner of Swan Street and Michigan Avenue is sporting a crisp, new look. A new brick facade has been installed on the structure. Work on the building, owned by James T. Sandoro, started late last year. From Courtney’s original post: The building was built in 1918 as a factory outlet for the Simon Pure Brewery. Soon after, pesky Prohibition got in the way and left the building and its industry sitting shuttered for 15 years until it finally opened in 1933. The 3,000 square foot, first-floor commercial space still flaunts the original tin ceiling, terrazzo floor and…

The New York City-based owners of the Tishman Building are upgrading the property to help attract new tenants. The prominent Lafayette Square office building has 198,000 sq.ft. of space spread over 20 floors. Built in 1958 by Tishman Realty & Development, the Tishman served as the long-time headquarters for National Fuel until the utility company left downtown for Amherst in 2003. A four-story industrial building on the East Side is being sold “regardless of price.” Cash Cunningham, who recently auctioned the Statler, is auctioning the property on Saturday. The action begins at noon on-site. The 91,000 sq.ft. brick building sits on 1.67 acres. Not much is known about the history of the building. One neighborhood resident believes it was originally a knitting factory. If so, it could have been “Monarch Knitting Co.” which lists a Doat at Genesee Street location in historical City Directories. From the History of Dunnville, Canada: Another major textile firm in Dunnville was the Monarch Knitting Co. founded in…

Thank you, BRO readers.  Your votes for the best places for Guy Fieri to visit during his Buffalo journey were heard, and he made good.  I met up with him at Sophia’s on Military Road this morning, and I have to say that any national celebrity who can be funny and gracious at 7:45AM is alright with me. I started out by filling him in on what BRO is (Buffalocentric), and finished with, “So think of this as a bad date; let’s talk about me, and by ‘me’, I mean Buffalo.”  He said that would be no problem at all.…

Auctioneer Cash Cunningham has been very busy in the past few weeks, leading a number of interested parties through the Statler in preparation for this week’s auction that will take place at 11AM on Wednesday, August 12th in the hotel’s lobby.”I’ve taken a number of people through, and we certainly hope for a successful auction, though their interest doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll bid,” Cunningham said. For instance, this morning Cunningham took a group through from New York, tomorrow, he’ll host a group from Florida, and in the past he said he’s seen a lot of people from New York City along…
