“A very poor family down the block, and the oldest boy, had his bike stolen.”So I put it on facebook, and within 2 hours, I had 15 responses; Within half in half an hour, he was riding up and down the street on a newly aquired bike.”Then, the man who put out that original call (who asked that his name be left out of the story) thought. “This is what facebook is for.” A few clicks later, and The Kindess Project was born.No politics, no self-promotion, no pretense. Pets are a blessing to many of us. Lots of them enjoy a life free of anxiety, full of naps and play with the people they love, and we could conclude that they are already blessed. That said, the Christian church, when it annually remembers St. Francis of Assisi, often pauses to also remember one of his loves: animals.Lafayette Church would like to invite you to have your pet blessed this Sunday, October 2, on our Elmwood lawn at 4:30pm this Sunday. If you want a particular Christian and/or Trinitarian blessing, you may ask for one, or you may simply…

THE BASICS: This political fantasy by Bernard Shaw, written during England’s gloomy, tumultuous Great Depression, has rarely seen the light of day. The first Canadian production was, in fact, at the Shaw Festival, in 1986. This new version, adapted by Canadian playwright Michael Healey, runs in repertory at the Court House Theatre at Niagara-on-the-Lake, through October 8th. The play runs 2 ¼ hours with its single intermission. THUMBNAIL SKETCH: The action takes place in the cabinet room at Number 10 Downing Street. Britain’s likeable but weak-kneed and dithering Prime Minister gets a crash course in Marxism, and attempts to turn…

Everybody’s talking about money this week. Federally, we need to borrow more of it, on a local level, Chris Collins is proud to have some left over. How much money you have says a lot about what you believe, but not nearly as much as what you do with it.That’s why I am so encouraged by West Side Stories. What encourages me the most is the audacity of its business plan. At a time when a large chain of bookstores is going under, and e-readers threaten to do to publishing what mp3s did to record stores, Jeannene and Mark choose…

This week, the Pride Parade, with its new route, assembles outside our church. As I considered what, if anything, the church should do, a good discussion developed on my facebook page.Instead of my usual post, I invited one of the participants in that discussion, Kristen Becker, to have a longer conversation, which we will have posted for your listening pleasure momentarily. The relationship between the church and the LBGT community has been a rocky one, to say the least.
