In true Larkin fashion, the Larkin District is introducing an inventive way to watch the Olympics (with sound) in style. Whether you’re sitting on the patio of the Larkin Filling Station, or at one of myriad outdoor seating areas, you can catch the Olympics being broadcasted over the big screen. “We are really excited to bring the Olympics to Larkin Square beginning with the opening ceremonies,” said Larkin Square Director of Fun Leslie Zemsky. “We have on location in the Square a 9′ x 12′ foot outdoor screen running the Olympics. The plan is to broadcast the Olympics from mid morning until 11…

The rumors are true. The former Ya Ya Brewhouse has been leased by a new restaurateur by the name of Jay Haynes. Haynes grew up in the restaurant industry before taking a job at Bethlehem Steel. When the steel plant closed he returned to the restaurant industry and hints that the culmination of all of his experience has led him to this point. He is now prepared to take on the 8,300 square foot space with a concept that will showcase a 1000 bottle wine cellar, 28-tap beers, a meat drying-aging facility, two banquet rooms and an in-house stage for…

There’s nothing better than visiting Canalside when a big ship has arrived. We all love the concerts, and the Saturday Artisan Market and the kayak rentals, but there’s something about seeing a giant tall ship tied up to the Central Wharf that puts it all into perspective. From August 6-8, The Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park and the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation are rolling out the welcome matt for Empire Sandy, Canada’s largest sailing tall ship. Up until this point, we’ve seen some good sized schooners such as the Edith M. Becker land in Buffalo, which is great.…

If you’re not aware that Buffalo’s Garden Walk is this weekend, then you’ve been living under a rock. The good thing is that even those living under rocks stand a good chance to be situated near a beautiful koi pond in the middle of a lush garden in the shade of a magnificent house. Since the Garden Walk began, I’ve witnessed much of the front yards on my street transformed into garden scapes, making my daily walk along the block an ever-changing visual experience rather than a stale programmed routine.Just in time for Garden Walk weekend, Visit Buffalo Niagara and First…

Work is underway to construct a new observation boardwalk at the furthest point of the Erie Basin Marina. It can’t believe that it was way back in 2007 when I got together with The City to discuss the possibility to have a small beach cleared (see back story). It was at that same time that The City first announced that a boardwalk would be built to play off of Emerald Beach. For a while I wasn’t sure if that observation boardwalk would ever see the light of day. I was just yesterday that, while visiting the marina, I noticed construction…

I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book. ~Groucho MarxIt’s not often that you can say that you witnessed a community reading event and came away reenergized, reinvigorated and enlightened. Witnessing the first flash mob Buffalo Reading Invasion appeared to be a bit surreal… like something that you might read in a book actually. In this case, it really did happen. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction – especially when an activity that is not normally considered very social is exposed to flash mob practices. Thanks…

It was back in December of ’11 when Justin Anderson first announced that he would be converting the former Barrel House on Chippewa into the Tap House Pub & Grille (see article). Since that time, Justin has been busy running the operation and serving up pub-style food and drinks to downtown-goers. This week Justin is also busy getting the back patio in working order for his dining-clientele. Honestly, I wasn’t even aware that there was an area behind the pub that was suitable for a patio. I am told that it was always just a place to store sundries and no one…
