The City of Buffalo is currently footing the bill for repaving Main Street between Humboldt Parkway and Delavan Avenue. Crews have been working since last week to remove the worn out asphalt and are preparing to lay down some new lane markings today. Unfortunately, those new markings will not include bike lanes.Any roads, new bridges, etc. in Erie County that are receiving federal money must be reviewed by the Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC) for a number of different reasons, including an evaluation to see if bike lanes are feasible. Since this project is funded by the City…

There are not a lot of places that you can go to watch movies outdoors these days. There was a time when the drive-in movie theater was all the rage… it’s too bad that they are so hard to find now. Occasionally there is the random showing of a movie in a park, or at an outdoor festival, but you really have to search them out. That’s why Movies in the Meadow is so much fun each summer – it’s a chance to do something a little bit out of the ordinary. All throughout August movie-lovers can attend a series…

As much as you might not be thinking of a specialty grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of soup right now, this fall you’ll be glad when Melting Point opens its doors at 244 Allen Street. The relatively small operation is the culmination of ideas between two foodies, Mike Kifner and Matt Yuhnke, who are in the midst of coming up with a menu that will boast fourteen different grilled cheese sandwiches along with a weekly and a monthly special. I asked Mike to give me an idea of what one of the sandwiches might be and he said that one…

This one is a first for me. I’ve never seen a sign that forbade anyone from locking up a bike to a public street sign. I came across the sign on Bidwell Parkway earlier today and got a chuckle to think that someone actually went out and bought such a bike ‘unfriendly’ deterrent. I’m pretty sure that the space of land situated between a public sidewalk and the street is still considered City right of way. Regardless, you can’t live along a public parkway and not expect to have someone eye up your street sign for bike protection. The wording clearly…

This summer was the first time that I noticed a new type of flyer being posted in certain neighborhoods. The one seen here is a call to action, but not one that you might normally expect. The sign posted on this tree (in front of this beautiful house) is designed to let neighbors know about “Work Days At Your Community Garden”. This particular garden that the flyer is referring to is located on York Street, and the grassroots initiative asks that neighbors come together to partake in gardening activities every Saturday. Not only does a community effort such as this ensure…

It was a little over a month ago when I received an email from Fox News reporter Shira Levine. She wanted to know about the underbelly of Buffalo – the refugees, the bike scene, the farmers, the artists… all of the things that are putting Buffalo on the map as a reemerging progressive city and cultural destination. The piece that Shira was working on has now been published and Buffalo is included in a list of top revival cities to visit. Here’s the excerpt regarding Buffalo:”We explored less devoured budget travel gems –Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Minneapolis, cities once balanced…

After years of hoping and praying that Buffalo’s outdated and ugly cobra head-style lamp standards would be eliminated and replaced with a more neighborhood-friendly and efficient model, there is actually signs of progress. This summer we should see Richmond Avenue undergo the change. From there, more streets will be added to the list. The total replacement of highway-style lamp standards will not happen overnight. Rather, it will be a long process, as there are a 32,000 found throughout the city, most of which are outdated. While the conversion process might take a while, the good news is that we will be…

After our third week of running The Peddler, a vintage-retro and antique market located at the corner of Elmwood and West Ferry, I am happy to say that weekly event has been a hit. Of course I am biased due to my involvement in the market, but overall the sellers have been happy with the sales and the browsers have been happy with their finds. Last week I spent a good chunk of time defending the market from one resident who lives a couple of blocks away – apparently the guy didn’t like the concept and filed a complaint with…

This past week Buffalo Rising photographer Lukia Costello made a trip over to The Broadway Market to check out the raised produce beds up on the market’s roof. If you were not aware that these raised beds existed, then you might be even more surprised to learn that there are over 100 all total. For the third year in a row, gardeners from the community have been taking to the rooftop in order to plant, till and harvest different varieties of plants and vegetables. Each year more raised beds are added and The Broadway Market has even established rooftop gardening classes.…
