I’ve always thought of pioneers to a new land as those who overcome great obstacles in their quest. Nowadays, it seems simple – book a flight, hire a moving van, have a job waiting and ready, an apartment all set, and friends or family at the front door the day of your arrival. Then there are those who set out on their journey similar to the old pioneer spirit, knowing instinctively that there will be a land of opportunity waiting if they just step out on faith. These are the true, new urban pioneers. BRO has posted a few stories…

A beautiful summer day is never wasted by Buffalo residents. If you have the time, I highly recommend checking out the Erie Basin Marina. Bring a few chairs or a blanket, and spend the day. Eating shouldn’t be a concern; there are two restaurants ready to serve you right on the water. If you’re looking for fancier fare, try Shanghai Red’s. Just in the mood for a burger and fries? Try The Hatch. Getting out on the water even if you don’t have a boat is easy. Shanghai Red’s charters the Moondance for tours right on the lake. (Don’t worry,…

From the time we began covering the Park Lane Condominium Project proposal, we have heard from two diametrically opposed factions within the community. Divisiveness concerning the issue grew to the point that we felt it was necessary to hit the streets in order to get reaction. We polled a lot of business owners due to the fact that they are most directly affected by Buffalo’s growth and the financial well-being that density brings to a community. The following video takes that side into consideration, and we were surprised by the unanimity.

David Burke Construction faces a $49,000 fine for “alleged repeat and serious violations of fall protection safety standards” stemming from the March 20 death of Jonathan Fundalinski during renovations at the Webb Building on Pearl Street. The OSHA report said Fundalinski, who was 24, fell to through a missing section of the building’s deteriorated second floor. An inspection showed no guardrails or safety nets in use, nor did Fundalinski have a “personal fall arrest system, such as a harness.” “The need for fall protection is clear and required and there’s absolutely no good reason for its absence in this type…

To be honest, I went out Wednesday night planning to chronicle the last night of this hockey season in Buffalo. After the way Ottawa crushed the Sabres in Monday night’s third game of the Eastern Conference Finals, physically and spiritually, in perhaps the most one-sided 1-0 game ever played in any sport, the logical conclusion was that Buffalo’s seven-month run as the new glamour team of the National Hockey League was in its death throes. Teams come back from 3-0 deficits every 30-some years (the 1942 Maple Leafs, the ’75 Islanders and, in baseball, the ’04 Red Sox), and no…

Shows how much I know. Last week’s preview of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Buffalo Sabres and the Ottawa Senators was rife with wisecracks about John Muckler, Ray Emery, Daniel Alfredsson and even the Roman Senate. All wrong, as it turns out, with the possible exception of the bit about the machismo exhibited by ancient Rome’s legislative body. I was not, however, the only one in these parts who badly underestimated Ottawa, judging from Buffalo’s performance during the first two games. Instead of being well on their way to the five-game triumph confidently predicted here and the shot at…

Unlike Buffalo’s opponents during the first two rather diplomatic rounds of the National Hockey League playoffs, working up a healthy dislike for the Ottawa Senators shouldn’t be too tough. There’s the Chris Neil hit on Chris Drury and the lengthy brawl which followed when Ottawa last visited HSBC Arena, on Feb. 22. You can relive the festivities here, including the love the Rogers Sportsnet announcers heap on Senators goalie Ray Emery, who is much better at throwing punches than stopping pucks. They also go out of their way to blame Drury for absorbing a hit that, while technically legal according…

Managing Editor Elena Cala Buscarino had an opportunity to sit down and talk to Mayor Brown last week. It was an interesting conversation that covered topics like tearing down Memorial Auditorium, Bass Pro, public education and bringing national retail to Buffalo. Last week, we ran the first part of the conversation dealing with Bass Pro. Yesterday, Brown spoke of efforts to recruit national retail to the area and today, the Mayor talks about specific municipal initiatives to support Buffalo Public Schools.
