Last weekend, contributor Sarah Rose Stone told you how excited she was about the Mac ‘n’ Cheese at Colter Bay. She and I have talked about macaroni and cheese on a couple of occasions. We’re both big fans and agree that a good version is hard to find in a restaurant. The post resulted in comments regarding which area restaurants had the best version as well as some discussion of what ingredients to use when preparing it at home. RisingDamp666 said: “Aged cheddar, parmesan, danish fontina, organic unsalted butter, organic whole milk, panko and a box of De Ceccho. Follow…

I recently had the chance to stop into the newly opened Village Beer Merchant. Not only are they open, but they’ve finally received their liquor license and should have the coolers stocked in no time. Look for an upcoming post from Queenseyes featuring more information about their selection. I’m excited to check out the selection and even more thrilled about the growler filling station. But as YUM editor, the fact that they are offering gourmet grocery items is perhaps most appealing. The shop is adorable, with one side of the store dedicated to wooden shelves stacked with unique items perfect…

January 25 is Burns Day in Scotland, a special holiday which celebrates the 1759 birth of poet, lyricist and Freemason Robert Burns. In Burns’ 37 short years he penned many of Scotland’s most famous songs and poems, earning his title as Scotland’s favorite bard. Burns is recognized internationally for composing New Years’ Eve favorite Auld Lang Syne, and his poem Comin’ Thro’ the Rye is considered to be the inspiration for J.D. Salinger’s iconic novel Catcher in the Rye. Though his poems and songs number in the hundreds, these two works, along with My Love is Like a Red, Red…

My husband and I rarely agree on anything when it comes to the kitchen. We like to think it keeps us young. We look at food completely differently, have entirely different favorite meals and restaurants, and when it comes to a home cooked meal, well, the kids have chosen sides. You can say the same thing about television. While he watches Family Guy and documentaries about carbon dating, I go for Gordon Ramsay’s stints on the BBC and The Office. But, oddly enough, we seem to have found some middle ground in Jamie Oliver’s new show. I wasn’t a fan…

I love brunch. I must not be the only one because Buffalo’s restaurants are bustling on Sundays, especially on sunny ones like the one we had yesterday. Reservations are a must when it comes to Left Bank’s mid-day offering. On our visit the seats were full by noon, and the sounds from the quiet chatter of guests and clinking of glassware were warmed by the soft music from the trio in the corner. Left Bank’s dining room was beautifully lit, as the sun’s rays bounced off of the pristine heaps of snow on the sidewalk and into the restaurant through…

I must admit that it’s been about a decade since I had dinner at Cozumel. I’ve frequented the bar plenty of times; with a huge selection of beers on tap and a killer outdoor patio, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the city’s most popular drinking spots. I’d been given a gift certificate for Christmas, so we packed the kids into the car and headed down for some warm and spicy Mexican-American fare on a cold and snowy weeknight. Cozumel’s menu includes all of the usual suspects: Tacos, quesadillas, burritos, fajitas, nachos and entrees featuring the likes of steak,…

You all know how much I love Guercio’s, so it’s no surprise that I was there yesterday afternoon. One of the things I love about going to Guercio’s during the day is watching how this little independent business maneuvers its tremendous wholesale business around its retail customers. Guys in jackets and aprons run cases and cases of product up and down the narrow aisles from the back of the warehouse out to the curb all day long. Even better is the chance to bump into chefs and restaurant staff picking up smaller orders or last minute items for the evening’s…

On a recent trip to the Lexington Co-op I ran into Barbara, the store’s cheesemonger and a former co-worker of mine. Barbara’s passion for cheese was recently featured in a Buffalo News article, and since then the cheese-vending area of the Co-op has seen a drastic increase in sales. I like to chat about cheese, and so does she, so there we found ourselves immersed in cheese talk at 8:30 in the morning. As we began to say good-bye she pointed out a few new cheeses that she thought I might be interested in. On a previous visit I was…

The basement of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church may not be the chicest marketplace in town aesthetically speaking, but true foodies will be thrilled with the selection of artisan goods available at Elmwood’s new Wintermarket. I was in a rush, but managed to pop in for a few minutes this afternoon. The crowd wasn’t huge, but the vendors assured me that they had done a steady business throughout the day. The always natty Patrick of White Cow Dairy was there with his full line of farmstead dairy products. Not only with the yogurt and custard we’ve all grown to love, but…
