I’ve always been very curious why I have not seen more food vendors on Elmwood Avenue. Yes, we now have our infamous Ice Creamcycle cruising around the strip, but that’s about it. This morning Drew Ludwig, Pastor of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church, called to inform me that he had just rented a small concrete footprint in front of his building to a hotdog vendor. Later in the afternoon I swung by to learn about the new partnership struck up between Drew and Nick Smith, proprietor of Nick’s Dogs. Nick had originally looked at setting up his first hotdog cart on…

What would it take for a city like Buffalo to become America’s Bike Capital? That might be a long-stretch, but at the same time can you imagine the benefits if we even attempted it? Sometimes if there is no ultimate goal, then you’re not quite sure where the bar is. And if you don’t happen to reach that bar and fall short, at least you’re way ahead of where you were. At this moment there are other cities that are battling it out to become the US Bike Capital… while others are going one step further by trying to claim…

Pugs are sausages with legs. At least that’s what Sandy Hertel, owner of Elmwood Village Fabrics told me earlier today. She sent me an email a couple of days ago to remind me that “40 little pop-eyed, curly-tail pork roasts with legs” would be congregating at the BuffOLA dog park to celebrate ‘all things pug’. The turnout was pretty spectacular – not only were there a countless number of pugs running around, there were also a variety of other small breeds, or toys, joining in on the fun. On the surface this meet-up was a blast for the dogs and…

Depending on the time of year… or the day of the week, I hear more and more people bringing up the city’s different strengths. This time of year it is the overbooked festival season that keeps us on our toes – yet do you think that folks in Toronto know that? We’ve had some very interesting food-related discussions on BRO – but are we ready to shed our chicken wing skin to tout some of our other cuisines? Have you heard about the ‘French Dip Sandwiches’ craze in LA? It sounds a heck of a lot like our very own…

It looks like there might be some added hope for the Jersey Livery after-all. I just got off of the phone with Tim Tielman (Campaign for Buffalo) and he sounded encouraged with recent developments. It appears that a good chunk of the building might be salvageable, and if The City plays its hand right there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. Of course much of how this will play out will depend on how aggressive The City will be… this could be an incredible precedent set, as well as a warning to future slumlords. From Tim:…

Back in May… of ’07, I wrote a post regarding a dog-friendly business moving into Allentown. The location was to be at the June 2 Modeling Agency building. It appears that after more than a year’s time, the Allentown Dog Center plan is moving forward. Actually, the signs on the building state that the business is scheduled to host an open house this weekend (June 21st). A quote from last year’s post: “We will be bringing a dog-friendly business to Allentown. It will be a place where owners can come to socialize their dogs. We will most likely offer doggy…

Every once in a while we run into a couple of business owners who do things a little bit differently. Take, for example, Sarah Gugino and Bob Testa, owners of Barking Spitfires on Elmwood. It’s one of the more unusual store names that I have come across that is for sure. But maybe it’s because this couple has decided that the premise behind their new ‘business’ is to have fun and they want to share their journey with the friends (both new and old). I first met Sarah and Bob when they were hosting one of their evening ‘socials’. I…

So what do you do when you own a couple of Ice Creamcycles and one of your helpers calls in sick? You call a buddy to take over the job. That’s what happened recently when Ice Creamcycle owner/operator James Karagiannis found out that his second vending cart suddenly had no operator. “That’s when he called me,” David Torke of Fix Buffalo told me. “I figured that I would help him out for the afternoon.” The week prior to seeing David on the cart, James had told me that he had recently purchased a second Ice Creamcyle. “That one is mainly…

Downtown residents and workers will soon have a doggy daycare nearby. Rosanne and Bob Higgins, owners of The Puppy Playpen, are busy working on their second location in the city. The original location, currently conducting business at the corner of Delaware and Dakota, continued to grow, which meant that the couple needed to search out an additional location. They chose two empty storefronts on Ellicott Street just down a ways from The Washington Market. The former flower shop was in dire need of a tenant after sitting empty for an extended period of time. Now the Ellicott block can add…
