Start your posting engines, BRO readers! Sharpen your digital pencils! In the last of the “Buffalo vs.” series we’re going to post, Buffalo meets up with the city we most love to hate (at least if you’re a sports fan), Miami. Personally, one of the things I love about our fair city is its self-depreciating humor. There’s not very much locally-based comedy these days, so I was thrilled to see an entire high-production value pilot poking fun at some of our sacred cows. It’s been an interesting experiment seeing the reaction these clips have generated, one which I hope Full…

Well, Full Circle Studios is definitely succeeding in its goal of getting people talking with locally-themed humor pieces, based on yesterday’s clip of “Buffalo v. NYC”. In today’s short, the Queen City compares notes with Charlotte, NC again starring John Kreuzer. The initial clip, “Buffalo v. Cleveland”, explains the series’ goal of creating content for a local cable station that would get people talking and watching the network again. The “Buffalo vs.” series was one of several themed shorts, some historical, some modern, which take aim at local culture. The mission, as outlined in their website for the work, was:…

Hallwalls is bringing Buffalo another treat this month in the debut feature film by underground visionary Jim Finn. Interkosmos assumes a fictional reality in which East German Cosmonauts and their allies attempt to establish socialist colonies on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn during the ‘70s. With a wit as dry as paper, Finn spins his tale with an incredible attention to detail and an ability to mash faked retro propaganda into a visual fairy tale of East German concepts of space and infinity. “I wanted the energy and idealism of the Marxist left to be a part of the…

Ragamuffins, a University District consignment shop featuring new and vintage clothing, has been on my radar for quite some time. Recently, I happened to be in the “nabe” for another appointment when I noticed that the open door. I took the opportunity to see just what this very cute store was all about. I’m so glad I did! Owner Gina Vallone greeted me as I entered. I immediately mentioned how very “summer-breezy” her current window featuring Lilly Pulitzer dresses was. She said “Yes, I carry a lot of vintage Lilly. It’s a big seller.” Indeed. In certain circles, a Lilly…

OK, we know that Buffalo is currently all-things-Sabres crazy. But did you know that the “Stanley Cup” happens to already be residing in Buffalo’s West Side, on the roof of La Nova Pizzaria? I was tooling across West Ferry, heading to Grant Street, when my friend said “Hey, look! The “Stanley Cup!” Even I, a hockey novice, know that the “Stanley Cup” is the big Kahuna of hockey. I looked to where he was pointing and sure enough, there it was; the “Stanley Cup” on the roof of La Nova! Let me tell you how it got there……. “We made…

Even though it’s May, April showers don’t seem to have ended. Each morning, it’s still difficult trying to figure out exactly what weather and more importantly, what precipitation to prepare for when one leaves their home. “Creatives” know that traveling from point A to point B with artwork, photos and other presentation tools can be very tricky. A single raindrop can often prove disastrous, so special precautions must be taken. I recently found these attractive and functional 16” x 18” portfolios at Clutch. They seemed perfect for transporting anything of a flat nature that needed to be protected from the…

There are some truly unique businesses here in Buffalo and the vintage emporium, Divine Finds, is absolutely one of them. Recently, owner Danielle Loukataris hosted a Friday evening event to celebrate the opening of Divine Finds’ new location at 801 Elmwood. What began in 1999 as an Ebay distraction from the duties of “new mother-hood” has blossomed into much more than a vital retail business. A favorite among the local “vintage clothing” crowd, Divine Finds is also one of the major “go to” resources for not only Buffalo’s annual World’s Largest Disco, but also for international vintage collectors and costume…

The Albright Knox Gallery Shop may not be the first place one would think of finding eco-friendly items, but there are indeed some great ones to be had. A recent visit found two stylish “refuge reuse” lines that were eco-friendly and possessed a stylish cachet to boot! Do you know WHO made your bag? If you owned one of these great bags from Escama/ Brasil, you certainly would know! Escama (“fish scales” in Portuguese) is a San Francisco-based business that has partnered with a women’s cooperative located in Brasilia, Brazil. This line of elegant purses and pouches are created from…
